BACKGROUND: Much interest has been drawn to the investigation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT)-axis in patients suffering from depression or panic disorder. However, there is no data concerning agoraphobia. METHODS: Patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, major depression were compared to normal controls (total n=88) in respect to HPT axis, obtaining basal TSH and administering a TRH test. RESULTS: Normal controls and agoraphobics showed significantly higher Delta(max) TSH than depressives and panic patients. There were no differences between agoraphobics and normal controls. CONCLUSIONS: Agoraphobia, unlike depression or panic disorder, seems to be less biologically determined in respect to the HPT-axis.
Malformations, deformations and abnormal intermaxillary relationships varying in severity can be found in cleft lip and/or palate children. Such multiple deformities have an influence on speech resonance and articulation, as well as on masticatory, auditive and respiratory functions. Therefore, a multidisciplinary team should monitor these patients from birth on to adulthood. This article describes our treatment protocol, discusses the limitations of dental orthopedic action and the indications for orthognathic surgery. Timing and techniques of different surgical interventions are presented and the impact of these procedures on velopharyngeal function is evaluated.
36 elderly outpatients (mean age 68.6 years) with depression and increased blood urea level were treated with mianserin (60 mg every evening). All patients were ordered to drink additionally 11 of mineral water per day, which only 30 patients complied with. The patients who complied with the ordered increase in fluid intake (responder, n = 30) showed in comparison to those who did not comply (non-responder, n = 6) a significant improvement in depression (i.e., HAM-D, p < 0.001) after a four week period of treatment (t2). The responders' blood urea level normalized whereas the non-responders' level, although lowered, still remained in the pathological range.

The crown-like projections on the surface of the particles permits differentiation of coronaviruses from other riboviruses and their individualization as a distinct family. Recognition of their role in the aetiology of respiratory, enteral and encephalitic infections has promoted investigations for the finding of preventive vaccines. Selection of the strains showed that their immunogenicity depends upon the density and salience of the crown-like projections, the antigenic relationship of the projections determining cross serologic reactions between different species. At present experiments are being carried out on animals with vaccines prepared with antigenically related heterologous cornavirus species, not pathogenic for the host, and with subunitary vaccines prepared from the projections of the homologous species. The Coronaviridae family established on morphologic criteria is thus confirmed by the immunologic relationship and specificity of its members.
We present data on fertility characteristics in the Venezuelan population for each sex separately, allowing a detailed comparative analysis of the variance in fertility between males and females. We show that the fertility distribution for both sexes is discontinuous, that the average female has a larger number of offspring per individual than the average male, and that highly fertile males outnumber highly fertile females so that the total number of offspring produced by males and females is balanced. Results indicate that a few males are responsible for a relative higher fertility of the average female and that interactions between polyandric females with monogamic and polygynic males are common. Among the Yanomami, a relatively unacculturated hunter-gatherer-horticulturist tribe, similar differences in fertility distribution of both sexes are apparent. The data suggest that human populations contain statistically distinct subpopulations, with different reproductive strategies, suggesting the existence of complex interactions among human populations which are not evident from the study of individuals or groups.
