[Clinical course, prognosis in patients treated for dilated cardiomyopathy].

Studies on heart failure treatment established the rationale of polypharmacy: it means combined diuretics, digoxin and vasodilators first of all ACE inhibitor therapy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of this therapy on the clinical course of 209 pts with dilatative cardiomyopathy and consecutive moderate--severe heart failure followed by and regularly controlled through 2.5-4 on the average 3 years at specialised out-patient clinic. Analysis of pts history showed the different frequency in occurrence of previous longlasting physical stress, alcohol consumption and viral infection respectively, which might have been the conditioning factors of heart failure. Cardiomegaly was evaluated on the basis of quantitative data of X-ray, and haemodynamic data from radionuclide measurements, that of the clinical course by a score system. The improvement of cardiomegaly and haemodynamic data, were observed in 6 months of treatment. The evaluation of clinical course showed improvement in 61%, and stable condition in 26% of pts in half a year. The rate of pts with improved and stable condition proved the beneficial effect of regular care and combined drug therapy. A similar longterm follow-up study on same large pts population with heart failure has not been published yet in Hungary.

[The tooth in the Bible].

In this short essay the author investigates from the view of pathology, physiology and dentistry those chapters of the Bible where human or animal teeth occur. Regarding the number of occurrences of teeth in the Bible there are 36 cases in the Old Testament and 11 in the New Testament. Out of this number 39 are about human teeth and 8 about those of the animals. The paper starts with the consideration of the talio-law (Lev 24.20: "If he knocks out a tooth, one of his teeth shall be knocked out"), which is regarded to be originated in the Babilonian King Hammurabi's compendium (B.C. 19th century), which was asserted by the king to have been delivered to him by Marduk. Comparing the habit of gnashing, grinding, or gritting of teeth, or showing the white of one's teeth, the author points out that whereas the first is a passive concomitant of pain (either mental--in which case it is called bruxomania, or otherwise: based on physical reasons) the second type is a phenomenon of an imminent action (i.e. threat or attack). Periodontics (or parodontology that is to say the branch that deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gums, the cementum peridontal membranes and alveolar bone), regards the grinding of the teeth to be a parafunction ...

[History of the Dental (Stomatologic) Clinic through 1920 (József Arkövy)].

The Dental Clinic of the Budapest University was established 100 years ago. The prehistory and the history of the first three decades of the clinic is closely attached to the course of life of Professor József Arkövy (1952 to 1922). Arkövy acquired a medical and dental master certificate in 1876. Between 1881 and 1890 he directs a private dental clinic. This became the basis of the University Dental Clinic opened in 1890 which disposed of a treating hall with 10 dental chairs, a narcosis chamber and a class room. In 1908, the clinic moves into a new building planned for such purpose and its name becomes Clinic of Stomatology. In the new clinic the departments of surgery, conserving dentistry and prosthetic dentistry became separated and there was a bedpatient department as well. Arkövy retired in 1920.

[The role of the life and works of Adolf Zsigmondy and Ottó Zsigmondy in the history of dentistry].

Adolf Zsigmondy and his son Ottó Zsigmondy were dentists of Hungarian origin who lived in Vienna. It was A. Zsigmondy's idea the method of teeth marking on the Zsigmondy-cross called later after him. This is the basis of the presently used marking method recommended by the FDI. He was the first to describe the contact and wear of the approximal side of the teeth. He continued to develop the cohesive gold fillings. O. Zsigmondy's more limited professional field of research was the preserving dentistry, he used sodium-superoxide for widening the rootcanal and he made permanent fillings of black hard guttapercha. On basis of observations carried out on himself he described the two-phase or temporal mastication called after him. He was also much engaged with professional politics, in his publications he strove for recognition of dentistry as an organic part of medical science.
