Population dynamics and schistosomal infection of Biomphalaria alexandrina in four irrigation canals in Egypt.

The natural growth, reproductivity, mortality and schistosomal infection of Biomphalaria alexandrina, the snail vector of Schistosoma mansoni in Egypt, were studied for one year in four irrigation canals, namely El-Khassa and Radwan (Giza Governorate) and Sendebis and Sanafeer (Qalyoubiya Governorate). Radwan canal contains a considerably dense Biomphalaria population and three generations of snails (parents generation and autumn and spring generations) were recognized. Two phases of growth were distinguished in both autumn and spring generations, a faster phase followed by a slower one. The faster phase extends from January to May and from March to August in the autumn and spring generations, respectively. The daily mortality rate of snails was highest in the hot season (June--September) and lowest in the cold months (December--April). Continuous reproductivity of Biomphalaria snails was observed allover the year with highest values of reproduction index from November to March. Biomphalaria snails collected from El Khassa and Radwan canals were free of S. mansoni infection, while snails of Sanafeer canal carried patent infection in September and October. Prepatent infection was also found in Sanafeer canal in July and September and in Sendebis canal in September.

Functional morphology of thyrotropic and corticotropic cells during reproductive cycle in ewe.

A histological examination has been carried on the pars distalis of the pituitaries of twelve, healthy sexually mature balady ewes which were classified into three groups Resting, follicular and luteal phases according to the different phases of reproduction. The histological features of the TSH- ACTH-cells during resting phase has been used to establish a standard with which the subsequent changes during the follicular and luteal phases were compared. Using PAS/OG, AB/OG and PFA/AB/PAS/OG stains the TSH- and ACTH-cells were differentiated and identified from the other forms of the pars distalis cells. The topographical study of the TSH- and ACTH-cells in various regions and levels in the pars distalis of balady ewe as well as their frequencies during the different phase of reproductive cycle were discussed. Statistical analysis of the different cell count during the different phases of reproductive cycle was conducted. TSH- and ACTH-cells exhibited signs of increased cellular activities and significantly increased in number during follicular phase and in the other phases of the reproductive cycle.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone

Cyclic morphological variations in the gonadotropic cells in the pituitary gland of ewe.

A histomorphological examination has been made in the pars distalis of the pituitaries of twelve normal healthy sexually mature ewes which were classified into three groups (resting, follicular and luteal phase) according to the different phases of reproduction. The histological features of FSH- and LH-cells during anestrus has been used to establish a standard with which the subsequent changes during the follicular and luteal phases were compared. Using PAS/OG, AB/OG and PFA/AB/PAS/OG stains, the FSH- and LH-cells were differentiated and identified from the other forms of the pars distalis cells. The topographical localization of the FSH- and LH-cells, in various regions and levels in the pars distalis of balady ewe as well as their frequencies during the different phases of reproductive cycle were discussed. Statistical analysis of the different cell count during the different phases of estrus cycle in comparison with the resting phase (anestrus), can be summarized as follows: - The FSH- and LH-cells are more pronounced, more active and significantly increased in number during the follicular phase of estrus cycle. - The LH-cells appear to be more abundant and show sings of hyperactivity at the luteal phase than the resting and follicular phases.

Histochemical and topographical studies on the somatotropic and lactotropic cells in ewe during reproductive cycle.

A histomorphological examination has been made on the pars distalis of the pituitaries from twelve, normal healthy sexually mature balady ewes which were divided into three groups, according to the different phases of reproduction (resting, follicular and luteal phase). The histological features of STH- and LTH-cells during resting has been used to establish a standard with which the subsequent changes during the follicular and luteal periods were compared. Using PAS/OG, AB/OG and PFA/AB/PAS/OG stains, the STH- and LTH-cells were differentiated and identified from the other forms of the pars distalis cells. The topographical localization of the STH- and LTH-cells in various regions and levels in the pars distalis of balady ewe as well as their frequencies during the different phases of reproductive cycle were discussed. Statistical analysis of the different cell count during the different phases of estrus cycle in comparison with the resting phase (anestrus), can be summarized as follows: --The STH-cells showed no significant variations during the resting, follicular and luteal phases. --The LTH-cells appeared to be more abundant and showed signs of hyperactivity at the diestrus than the anestrus and estrus phases.

[Transrectal ultrasonography of the prostate (author's transl)].

A French instrumentation for transrectal ultrasonography of the prostate by means of a rectal probe containing a rotative transducer is presented. Typical ultrasonographic images are shown. Accurate information on the size of the gland is obtained by this method and adenomas can easily be distinguished from adenocarcinomas. The method might eventually be of considerable value for the screening of asymptomatic subjects and early detection of prostatic cancer.

The effect of zeranol implantation on some endocrine glands and gonads in fat-tailed lambs.

The present work was carried out to study the effect of zeranol on the pars distalis of 39 male fat-tailed lambs about 8 months old. The examined animals were classified into 3 groups. The group I was considered as control, group II and III were implanted subcutaneously in the back side of ear with 3 doses each of 12 mg zeranol at 40 - days intervals. Groups I and II were fed on concentrate mixture containing 70.45% starch and 14.42% digestible protein, while that of the group III containing 70.44% starch value and 7.92% digestible protein. Zeranol implants have been shown to increase body weight of animals group II and III. A significant difference was found in the number of the pars distalis cells as well as the histochemical changes in their properties have been observed in zeranol implanted lambs. The STH-cell showed a significant increase in number and signs of cellular hyperactivity. The ICSH-cells, FSH-cells and TSH-cells were significantly decreased in number and exhibited signs of less activity compared with the propriate cells of the nonimplanted animals. It is concluded that Zeranol improve gain, stimulate STH-cells and inhibit the GTH-cells as well as TSH-cells in the pars distalis of zeranol implanted animals.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone

Effect of triiodothyronine on blood lipids in obesity.

Different blood lipid components were evaluated in obese and normal Egyptians. In obese, plasma levels of total lipoproteins, beta-lipoprotein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-esterified fatty acids were found to be significantly elevated. The plasma levels of esterified cholesterol and phospholipids were found to be significantly reduced. Tertroxine caused a drop of the plasma level of total lipoproteins, beta lipoproteins and total cholesterol and rise of plasma level of non-esterified fatty acids.
