[Corneal neovascularization following short-term wear of soft contact lenses].

Between 1980 and 1982 the author treated 9 patients suffering from severe, partly irreversible bilateral damage to the cornea resulting from the use of soft contact lenses. After three months to two years the patients complained of a foreign body sensation, dryness and of a substantial reduction in visual acuity. The high degree of comfort experienced initially encourages patients to wear soft lenses for excessively long periods of time and this can lead to severe complications: while at first there was only slight capillary proliferation at the limbus, superficial and deep vascular proliferation subsequently developed. Use of the soft contact lenses was discontinued and locally applied corticosteroids brought about some improvement. However neovascularization persisted, requiring an intraocular lens implant in one eye - and causing a permanent reduction in the visual acuity of three patients. Wearers of soft contact lenses should be examined regularly by an ophthalmologist (at least twice a year) and should be made aware of the above complications.

[Light- and electron microscopic findings of an adenocarcinoma of the caruncle (author's transl)].

The clinical, histological and electron microscopical findings of an adenocarcinoma of the caruncle are discussed. This type of adenocarcinoma differs neither in clinical development nor fine tissue structure from the adenocarcinoma of the Meibomian or Zeis's glands. Although, it seems to have a better prognosis than columnar cell carcinoma, radical excision and postoperative radiotherapy are recommended. The possibility of confusion with chronic inflammatory processes (chalazion) is pointed out.

[Changes in the outer plexiform layer of the rabbit retina after long-term application of vincristine].

Rabbits which had been intravenously injected with Vincristine for six weeks showed changes in the outer plexiform layer of the retina after one year, which suggests the destruction of receptor cells, bipolar ganglion cells, and horizontal cells. Compensated cell damage accompanied by loss of microtubuli in the cytoplasma, autolytic vacuoles, granular material deposits, and membrane changes of the ribbon complex were frequently observed. A comparison between axons and dendrites showed a predominance of damaged dendritis over axons. Because short-term studies have not produced the same results, different regeneration capacities, which might have their origin in the endoplasmatic reticulum, are discussed.

[Electron-microscopic findings in Bowen's disease of the conjunctiva (author's transl)].

The conjunctival tumors of eleven patients were histologically diagnosed as an intraepithelial squamous cell carcinoma Bowen's disease. All characteristic intraepithelial changes were manifest. Microinvasion, secondary dyskeratosia, dyskeratotic keratinisation, individual cell keratinization, and loss of intercellular desmosomes were clearly evident in the electron microscope. Virus-like organisms were not observed.

[Different types of cells in tissue cultures of normal bovine iris (author's transl)].

Calf iris tissue cultured in TCM 199 was studied under the electron microscope at 5, 14, and 21 days. Melanocytes and clump cells (macrophages), and mast cells could be distinguished, as well as fibroblasts, round cells, and non striated muscle cells, Melanocytes lost their pigment granules temporarily, but not their ability to produce new ones again after a certain adaptation period. The morphology of clump and mast cells was only slightly altered. In incubation, fibroblasts and round cells were found to have spheroid surfaces. After a 3 week's culture, muscle cells showed signs of growth.

[A histological and electron microscopic study of the rabbit retina after application of vincristin (author's transl)].

Temporary electrophysiological damage to the rabbit eye proportional to dosis and application time was observed after application of Vincristin (Lilly). Cell destruction in all retinal layers was observed upon histological and electron microscopic examination of the animals. The outer segments of the receptor cells showed chiefly diffuse damage, and the pigment epithelial cells showed a high incidence of reorganization. Follow-up examination one year later showed this damage to be partially reparable, especially when very high doses had not been applied. Regeneration of the outer segments was observed. Destruction through pyknosis of the nucleus and cytoplasmal destruction was observed in a small number of receptor cells, bipolar ganglion cells, and ganglion cells. This also explained the absence of lasting functional abnormalities in the ERG and EVP.
