A longitudinal study of multiple approaches to dental health education.

An evaluation was made of the separate effects on oral hygiene of token reward treatments, discovery (project) learning, and plaque staining feedback demonstrations with children in the first through fifth grades. Both short- and long-term effects were assessed in an open classroom setting. Twenty classrooms were non-randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Plaque scores were recorded according to the Podshadley Patient Hygiene Performance Index (PHP) at time T0, before initiation of any of the educational interventions; and again at times T1, T2, and T3; 7 days, 74 days and 255 days, respectively, following cessation of the educational interventions. The combination of dental health interventions at this school had short-range effects at every grade level, and those effects persisted for 9 months among the third and fourth graders. It was not possible to identify which of the various treatments produced the observed differences, although the project learning method was generally less effective. A linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the shifts in oral hygiene behavior, a method not previously used in studies of this type.

Effect of visual stimulation on the evoked response recorded at the vertex.

Previous research on the visual evoked brain response (VEBR) recorded from the occipital scalp indicates that this response shows a high degree of stimulus control. An evoked brain response can also be elicited simultaneously from the vertex response is affected to the same degree by several different aspects of visual stimuli as is the corresponding occipital response. The VEBR was recorded from the vertex of 3 human subjects as a function of changes in stimulus size and intensity. The results showed that the amplitude of the first major positive component of the VEBR was not reliably related to the stimulus parameters. It was concluded that the VEBR recorded at the vertex probably has its source in a distinct cortical generator which is not specifically related to the parameters of visual stimulation.

Electroencephalography

An analysis of the supply of and demand for continuing education in geriatric dentistry.

Continuing education directors at 158 sites were surveyed regarding their recent experience with geriatric dentistry courses. Of the 116 returns cited, 86 recorded offering courses with a total enrollment of 4,559 students. The courses tended to be of the survey type using a lecture format. Most directors thought that practitioner demand for such courses fell short of their need for education. Several suggestions emanated from this project for improving course attendance. They included: targeting courses to specific clinical areas; providing separate courses for each segment of the geriatric population; and educating both elders and dentists regarding the appropriateness of dental care for the elderly patient.
