Vitrectomy and lensectomy in the management of intraocular foreign bodies--magnetic and nonmagnetic.

The Girard Ultrasonic Fragmentor makes it possible for the surgeon to remove opaque vitreous and cataractous lenses in order to be able to visualize directly intraocular foreign bodies, both magnetic and nonmagnetic. This greatly facilitates the removal and prevents many of the complications of the removal of intraocular foreign bodies. The technique can be performed either through the anterior chamber or the pars plana.

Pars plana vitrectomy.

Sixty-four consecutive pars plana vitrectomies were performed with the Douvas roto-extractor for anterior and posterior vitreous opacities. Eighty-four per cent of the anterior segment vitrectomy patients obtained improvement in visual acuity after surgery. Only 60% of the posterior segment patients obtained improvement in visual acuity, while only 45% of the eyes with active proliferative diabetic retinopathy had improved vision.

Fluorescein angiographic findings in familial exudative vitreoretinopathy.

We describe the fluorescein angiograms in four cases of familial exudative vitreoretinopathy. The vascular nature of the temporal retinal masses is confirmed. Primary abnormalities within the peripheral retinal circulation are demonstrated. We stress the similarity between familial exudative vitreoretinopathy and retrolental fibroplasia.
