Ex vivo evaluation of pidotimod activity on cell-mediated immunity.

The activity of pidotimod ((R)-3-[(S)-(5-oxo2-pyrrolidinyl) carbonyl]-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid, PGT/1A, CAS 121808-62-6) on immunological parameters was evaluated in a double-blind trial, involving two Research Centres. 16 patients with a primary or metastatic neoplasm, 16 elderly patients under immunodeficiency conditions and 11 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the present study. The patients, randomized within each centre, were assigned to one of the following treatments lasting 15 days: one vial i.m. of pidotimod 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg twice a day, respectively; one vial i.m. of physiological saline twice a day. The lymphocyte PHA-stimulation test evidenced a significant variability due to the different treatment groups (p = 0.004). The analysis of the stimulation index (SI), computed from the mean c.p.m. before and after PHA-stimulation, showed a significant difference, dose-independent, between saline and active treatment (p = 0.002). The SI analysis, on the basis of the data of the allogenic stimulation test (mixed lymphocyte culture), confirmed the difference between saline and active treatment (p = 0.05) with a significant linear component in the time-effect curve (p = 0.001) but not in the dose-effect curve. A 12% increase in CD 3 lymphocytes compartment was observed with pidotimod 400 mg/day. The drug was well tolerated by all the patients included in the study.

[Comparison between isteropac and a new non-ionic contrast medium for hysterosalpingography (B-15000)].

The authors refer the results of a double blind hysterosalpingographic study with a traditional ionic contrast medium (Isteropac) and a new non-ionic one (B-15000). Both the contrast have provided good quality images, without significant intolerance. Moreover the new non-ionic contrast medium has shown an easier utero-tubal transit with a sensible reduction of the examination length and a better diagnostic result.

Does MURCS association represent an actual nonrandom complex of malformations?

The MURCS association was first suggested by Duncan in 1979 as a distinctive nonrandom association of congenital anomalies involving the Mullerian duct, the kidneys and the cervicothoracic spine. Two personal cases, highly resembling Duncan's description, are reported. In our opinion, they seem to support somehow the hypothesis that MURCS association should be considered as an autonomous pathological entity. The great phenotypical variability and the still unknown etiopathogenetic mechanism are particularly stressed.

[Hysterography and hysteroscopy. Comparative study of 50 patients].

Hysterography and hysteroscopy have been compared in the diagnosis of endouterine benign pathology, in a group of 50 patients, complaining meno-metrorrhagia, sterility, infertility or amenorrhea. Hysterography resulted more sensible (95.3%), but less specific (86.3%) than hysteroscopy (88.8% and 95.6%).

An unusual kind of muscular and skeletal involvement in a heroin addict. A case report.

After a brief review of the infectious complications that frequently occur in heroin users, the authors report a case of chronic osteomyelitis affecting the ulnar diaphysis bilaterally. Musculo-cutaneous dystrophic lesions were also present and resulted in forced flexion of the distal phalanges of fingers 2-5. The most likely pathogenetic development discussed.

[Prone position in hysterosalpingography].

The authors discuss the importance of prone hysterosalpingography to the aim of a careful tubal examination. Nearly all the complete or partial tubal obstructions, observed during supine hysterosalpingography, have been resolved by the simple prone position. The high percentage (91%) of successes, without pharmacological help, recommends the routine use of this simple method in all cases of doubtful tubal obstructions.

[Congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle: roentgenographic appearance and discussion of the aetiological and pathogenetical theories [author's transl].

The authors briefly reviewed the anatomic and radiological pattern of the congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle, with the main aetiological and pathogenetical theories. They also report their personal experience about 2 patients, stressing the peculiarity of this affection compared with others similar in their radiological pattern. They underline the coexistence, in one of the two cases, of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, suggesting a single vascular aetiology and pathogenesis.

[Use of physical therapy in the prevention and treatment of decubitus ulcer].

The causes of bedsores and their complications are described, along with the preventive and surgical, medical and physiotherapeutic measures used in their treatment. Personal experience with an association of drugs and physiotherapy in 21 cases is reported and the modalities employed are described in detail. The advantages offered by the association in the way of simplicity and satisfacory results are explained.
