[Psychopathological disorders in otorhinolaryngological neoplasms].

The authors analyze the psychopathologic disorders at the patients affected from O.R.L. cancers. They refer specially to larynx cancer, because of the significance on the loss in speech ability, if the treatment includes total laryngectomy, added to the fear characteristic of the patient with cancer. The highly incidence of alcoholism before diagnosis is also verified, what imply the addiction of psychopathologic disorders. It's estimated a well order to take part actively in their rehabilitation besides the lower incidence of alcoholism after surgery.

[Personality and emesis in the patient treated with antineoplastic chemotherapy].

A sample of twenty cancer patients following chemotherapy realize MMPI questionnaire, and another one for valuation of emetic and anticipatory phenomena in relation to said therapy. The authors came to the conclusion that 36.8% of the sample had anticipatory nausea and vomiting, 63.6% anticipatory dysphoria, and 66% emetic incidents after chemotherapy. The conclusion, through comparison of personality variables, is that all patients showed neuroticism and depression scales increased, in relation to healthy population. Depression variable increased especially in patients that didn't present anticipatory nausea and vomiting. Likewise, patients with anticipatory symptoms or emetic incidents after chemotherapy present an increased social introversion variable.

[Spinal osteoblastoma. Report of 8 cases].

The authors studied the special features of the vertebral location of this benign tumour of osteoblastic origin in eight cases of spinal osteoblastoma. Clinically, neurological complications are frequently present and scolioses may arise and persist after treatment; radiologically, new imaging techniques enable the limits of the tumour to be assessed with greater accuracy with respect to the neighbouring bone and their relationship to the components of the vertebral canal; surgically, there are difficulties specific to this location raised by the proximity of nervous components, and also by the vertebral destabilization entailed by the considerable bone involvement. Anatomicopathological diagnosis remains difficult, particularly in the case of osteoid osteoma.

[Phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase anomalies in 2 cases of gout beginning at an early age].

On the basis of a study of the action of phosphoribosylpyrophosphate (PRPP) synthetase (EC 2.7.6.1.) in 22 hyperuricemic and 9 normal subjects, the authors report two cases of gout with anomalies of the kinetics of this enzyme. The anomaly consists of an increase in affinity for inorganic phosphate (iP) in the absence of inhibitors, and a decrease in inhibition by low concentrations of ADP in the presence of iP. These patients show no other anomaly of intraerythrocyte PRPP (dosage and production "in vitro"), hypoxanthine-guanine-phosphoribosyl-transferase and APRTase (overall activity and apparent Km). These two cases of gout are characterized clinically by their early occurrence, appearing in one case in a pre-menopausal woman, their family character and their normal sensitivity to allopurinol.

[Incidence and multivariable genesis of postmenopausal depression].

The present work tried to find out the postmenopausal depression rates and whether depressive symptoms are due to hormonal disturbances or to multiple variables, not only biological, but also psychological and social. The sample included 128 women with no psychiatric history, pharmacological therapy or recent, important events. Results show a high rate of depression related to different variables, but especially over that of the negative anticipated thinking.

[Psycho-oncology: influence of external perception on the personality characteristics in women with cancer].

Personality traits between two female groups suffering cancer with different symptomatology and treatment are compared. The authors study 59 female patients: 35 with breast cancer and 24 with hematologic neoplasia. The MMPI Inventory and the Scale to Measure of Aggression by Ledesma et al were studied. It has been found that there are similar personality traits in both groups although there are some significant differences. The group with breast cancer showed an increase both in the MMPI Si scale (Social introversion) and in self aggression with respect to the hematologic neoplasia group. On the other hand, the patients with hematologic cancer showed an increase of the hypochondria, depression and paranoia as well as hetero aggression.

[Spanish adaptation of the Alzheimer's disease assessment scale (ADAS)].

The Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale, was designed specifically to evaluate the severity of cognitive and noncognitive behavioral dysfunctions characteristic of persons with Alzheimer's disease. Twenty-one items with significant intraclass correlation coefficients for interrater reliability (0.975 for cognitive subscale, 0.933 for noncognitive subscale and 0.973 for total score), significant Spearman correlation coefficients for test-reliability (0.901 for cognitive subscale 0.574 for noncognitive subscale and 0.824 for total score) and significant correlation coefficients for concurrent validity (0.872 for subscale cognitive, 0,584 for noncognitive subscale), constitute the scale.

[Psychooncology: anxiety].

Some specific aspects of Psychooncology, particularly different types of anxiety, are revised and classified according to its causes (situational, somatic, postreactivation and posttherepeutic) and to the time of onset (postdiagnosis, postreatment and terminal states). Therapeutical guides are proposed.

Anxiety Disorders↗

[Seasonal affective disorder and light therapy].

Seasonal affective disorders (SAD) represents a subgroup of major depression with a regular occurrence of symptoms in autumn and winter and full remission in spring and summer. Light therapy or phototherapy has become the standard treatment of this type of depression. The phototherapy is affective therapy for depressive symptoms of SAD. However, the action mechanism of light therapy is uncertain. Finally, new lines of the investigation of light therapy are aforementioned.

[Sexual dysfunction secondary to SSRIs. A comparative analysis in 308 patients].

UNLABELLED: The authors analyze the incidence of sexual dysfunction (SD) with different SSRIs (Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine and Sertraline) and hence the qualitative and quantitative changes in SD throughout time 308 outpatients (169 women, 139 men; mean +/- SD age = 41 +/- 7) under treatment with SSRIs were interviewed with an SD questionnaire designed for this purpose by the authors including questions about the following items decreased libido, delayed orgasm or anorgasmia, delayed ejaculation inability to ejaculation, impotence and general sexual satisfaction. Patients with the following criteria were included: normal sexual function before SSRIs intake, exclusive treatment with SSRIs or associated with benzodiazepines, previous heterosexual or self-orone current sexual practices. We excluded patients with previous sexual dysfunction, association of SSRIs with neuroleptics, recently hormone intake and significant medical illnesses. RESULTS: There is a significant increase in the incidence of SD when the physicians ask the patients direct questions (55.29%) versus spontaneous SD reported (14.2%). There are some significant differences among different SSRIs paroxetine provoked more delay of orgasm/ejaculation and more impotence than fluvoxamine, fluoxetine and sertraline (Chi square p < 0.05). Only 22.6% of the patients had a good tolerance about their sexual dysfunction. SD has positive correlation with the dose. The patients experienced substantial improvement in sexual function when the dose was diminished or the drug was withdrawn. Men showed more incidence of sexual dysfunction than women but women's sexual dysfunction was more intense than men. Seven of nine patients (77.7%) experienced total improvement when the treatment was changed to Moclobemide (450 mg/day) and two of four patients (50%) improved when treatment was changed to Amineptine.

[Psycho-oncology: psychological disorders during autologous bone marrow transplantation].

Use of BMT (bone marrow transplatation) has rapidly grown in the last few years. It extends to a variety of neoplastic illnesses and hematological malignancies. This procedure includes implicit appearance of many and important stressors, both physical and psychological, due to the illness and to chemotherapy treatments, among which the appearance and severe colateral effects during the stay in hospital has a special relevance. The need to consider the influency of predictive variables like, prior experiences, optimistic vs. pesimistic expectancies and the strategies of coping used in the adaptation through the treatment, are a central point in the study of the fluctuations of the different psychological responses and their interrelation with the physiology symtomatology which are present during the different phases of the process of BMT.
