Ultrastructural study of the ciliated cells from renal tubular epithelium in acute progressive glomerulonephritis.

Light microscopic examination of the renal tubular epithelium of a female with a rapid progressive glomerulonephritis revealed in several areas the presence of cells bearing ciliumlike structures. At transmission electron microscopy, normal tubular cells appeared to be partially replaced by epithelial cells showing numerous 9 X 2 cilia and a normally developed basal apparatus. The cilia showed several ultrastructural details (i.e., outer dynein arms, spokes) such as observed in kinocilia of the respiratory epithelium. In addition, a number of poorly differentiated cells showing cilia with a 9 + 0 pattern and at the same time cilia with a 9 + 2 pattern of microtubular arrangement were also seen. The possible biologic significance of these cilia is discussed.

Response of lung enzyme activities in rabbits following short-term exposure to n-hexane: correlation between morphological and biochemical changes.

The activity of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-glucuronidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, acid and alkaline phosphatase was studied in lung homogenate from New Zealand rabbits exposed to 3000 p.p.m. of n-hexane 8 h per day for 8 days of filtered air. In hydrocarbon-treated animals all enzymes examined, except alkaline phosphatase, were markedly increased. The biochemical changes correlated well with the morphological changes and the results of cytological evaluation of bronchopulmonary lavage. It is suggested that high values in lung lysosomal enzymes from treated rabbits reflect the acute inflammation whilst the increase in lung glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase may depend upon reparative process subsequent to n-hexane-induced lung damage.

Ultrastructural observations on morphogenesis of atypical cilia.

Though ultrastructural studies of bronchial epithelium both in man and in experimental animals revealed in a variety of conditions the presence of pathologically altered cilia, little is known about their genesis and significance. In this work we have described the alterations noticed in ciliary morphology during the formation of atypical cilia. A probable mechanism for their production is also proposed on the basis of our results.

[A rare case of continuous type spleno-gonadal fusion].

The authors present a case of continuous spleno-testicular fusion in a three year old child and emphasize the rarity of this condition, on the basis of an examination of the literature. The pathogenic mechanisms and clinical characteristics of this condition are studied in the light of the reported cases, and are discussed.

[Histopathology of the hepatic lesions in brucellosis based on biopsy findings].

22 liver biopsies from patients affected by brucellosis (Brucella melitensis) have been studied as far as granuloma formation is concerned. The first phase of granulomatous lesion seems to be the presence of monocytes within the hepatic sinusoids. Then we can observe small histiocytic granuloma and finally a "mature" (Adams [1]) granuloma, i.e. an organized collection of mature mononuclear phagocytes without necrosis, but sometimes with giant cells.

Respiratory tract lesions induced in rabbits by short-term exposure to N-hexane.

New Zealand rabbits were exposed in inhalation chambers to 3,000 ppm of n-hexane 8h/d for 8 d, and the acute respiratory effects were studied by light and electron microscopy. Animals intoxicated showed morphological changes in the lung parenchyma characterized by centriacinar emphysema and scattered micro haemorrhages. Lung damage was most severe at the transition zone from terminal bronchiole to alveolar ducts. This centriacinar lesion consisted to degenerative and necrotic phenomena in bronchiolar epithelium with cellular desquamation, increased number of macrophages within proximal alveoli of alveolar ducts, increased number and size of lamellar bodies in alveolar type II cells, changes in the vascular endothelium. Focal subpleural atelectasis, alveolar and interstitial oedema were also found. The segmental distribution of the pulmonary lesions were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy.

[Pulmonary damage in the rabbit caused by porcine pancreatic elastase and leukocyte lysate: unusual microscopic aspects].

Intratracheal injection of rabbit whole leukocyte homogenate induced emphysema-like lesions in rabbits. The lesions were produced only by preparations having elastinolytic activity. The pathological aspects appeared similar to those induced by the administration of porcine pancreatic elastase. The pulmonary changes, resembling several of the anatomic appearances of panacinar human emphysema, may be a suitable experimental model for studying histogenesis of panacinar human emphysema. Numerous abnormal fenestrations were present in air spaces walls and were a constant feature in opposition to that has been reported in elastase-treated hamsters. For the presence of a prominent dilatation of the periarterial lymphatic network, this experimental model might be used also for studying the ultrastructural features of pulmonary lymphatic vessels.

[Morphometric analysis of lymphoid organs in the orchiectomized rat].

Morphometrical analysis of lymphoid organs has been performed 30 days after bilateral orchidectomy in Wistar rats. The percentage of thymus cortical area and of lymph node paracortical areas (filled with large lymphoid cells) has been found increased. These morphological changes seem to indicate that orchidectomy enhance lymph node cell-mediated immune response in the rat.

[Morphometric analysis of lymphoid organs in the ovariectomized rat].

Morphometrical analysis of lymphoid organs has been performed 30 days after bilateral ovariectomy in Wistar rats. The percentage of thymus medullary area and lymph node cortical area (containing numerous large germinal centers) have been found increased. No significant changes there were in paracortical areas. The enlarged thymus medullary area, showing small lymphocytes in lymphatic vessels, could be correlated with the hyperfunction of "helper" T-lymphocytes. These findings indicate that morphological signs of increased antibody mediated immunity of the lymphoid organs appear in ovariectomized rats.

[Morphometric analysis of lymphoid organs in the hypophysectomized rat].

The effects of hypophysectomy on the lymphoid organs were evaluated in Wistar rats by morphometrical analysis: after 30 days the percentage of thymus cortical area and lymph node paracortical areas were reduced. In the thymus cortex, signs of orthological involution (e.c.: nodular cortex) appeared. A significant enlargement of lymph node cortical areas, containing a high number of germinal centers with degenerative changes, could be seen. These findings suggest a significant trophic action of hypophysis on thymus and, perhaps, an impaired lymph node antibody mediated response due to the loss of T-B cooperation.
