Making the transition from acute care to school nursing.

School nursing is an interdisciplinary specialty demanding diverse nursing skills. Many of these skills might best be acquired through experience in other settings. The school population presents many nursing challenges, and there may be no supportive circle of specialists and peers readily available to the new school nurse. Further, in some states there is a shortage of educational opportunities and practicums specific to school nursing; therefore, most school nurses enter school nursing with education that is not specific to the school setting and with skills acquired in other settings, often in acute care. The main challenge for many new school nurses is effectively transferring those skills to an educational setting. This article shares observations and ideas on ways that the new school nurse can effectively make the transition.

An evaluation of the performance of laboratories in the assays of oestriol and creatinine in pregnancy urine: the national pregnancy urine survey.

The performance of clinical chemistry laboratories in New Zealand in the assays of oestriol and creatinine in pregnancy urine has been investigated. The quality of oestriol determinations in general was poor. Only seven of 20 laboratories achieved an inter-assay precision of better than 12 percent consistently through the range of oestriol levels represented by three control urines. The precision of laboratories in assaying urinary creatinine was, however, of a higher standard. Only three of 18 laboratories had precision values that could be regarded overall as unsatisfactory.

A bed-mounted mobile intensive-care unit.

The provision of intensive-care facilities for patients in transit can present problems. We describe our novel approach to these in which we have added facilities to a standard bed which is used for the transfer of patients. This may also be a cost-effective method of providing intensive-care equipment to beds at any location.
