Development of an accurate three-dimensional finite element knee model.

This paper presents the development of a detailed articulating three-dimensional finite-element model of the human knee, derived from MRI scan images. The model utilises precise material models and many contact interfaces in order to produce a realistic kinematic response. The behaviour of the model was examined within two fields of biomechanical simulations: general life and car-crash. These simulations were performed with the non-linear explicit dynamic code PAM-SAFE trade mark. The knee model produced results that compared favourably with existing literature. Such a model (together with other joint models that could be constructed using the same techniques) would be a valuable tool for examining new designs of prosthesis and mechanisms of injury.

Leakage of amalgam, composite, and Super-EBA, compared with a new retrofill material: bone cement.

An in vitro leakage study was conducted to compare the root-end sealing ability of amalgam with cavity varnish, composite with dentin bonding agent, and Super-EBA with a new retrofill material: bone cement. Eighty single-rooted teeth were instrumented and obturated with gutta percha, resected and retroprepared. The teeth were then randomly divided into 4 groups of 20, with each group receiving one of the previously mentioned retrofill materials. The bone cement group was either etched or unetched. The teeth were immersed in silver nitrate and developer for leakage assessment. The teeth were grooved and split longitudinally to measure leakage. Statistical analysis showed that amalgam leaked significantly less than Super-EBA and unetched bone cement; composite leaked significantly less than Super-EBA. Amalgam was not statistically different from composite or etched bone cement. No significant difference between composite and both bone cements was noted, nor between both bone cements and Super-EBA.

Down's syndrome and eating disorders. A case study.

We describe the case of a 33-year-old man with Down's syndrome and severe eating disorders. The clinical symptoms, and their difference from those of anorexia nervosa, are discussed. The patient responded well to a strict behavioural programme after long, in-patient treatment and was still well at a 2-year follow-up examination.

Early abandonment of breast feeding: causes and effects.

One hundred and six primiparous women were interviewed late in pregnancy and at 4 and 14 months post-partum. Information was obtained about infant feeding and various psychological and social variables at each stage, and about infant temperament at the 4 and 14 months post-partum interviews. Few social or psychological variables related to the duration of breast feeding, nor was there a relationship between the child's temperament and the type of feeding or duration of breast feeding. The implications of these findings are discussed.
