[Morphological research on different ways of joining the rectus muscles of the eye].

The paper analyses results of comparative clinico-morphological studies of two methods for ocular rectus muscles a sutural and a loop methods used in 8 rabbits (16 eyes). Histologic examination of specimens of eye made 4-6 months after surgical intervention has shown that a loop method provides preservation of the structure of muscular tissue to a much greater degree than a sutural method. The results obtained allow to consider the loop method to be a method of choice for the usage in clinical practice as being less traumatic. The effectiveness of the operation was recorded in 15 patients with monolateral convergent paralytic strabismus. The follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 2 years.

[Reaction of vessels of the microcirculatory bed of subcutaneous tissue to exposure to an argon laser beam].

The effect of argon laser irradiation on the microvessels of the subcutaneous fat tissue of rabbit's ear placed into Clark's transparent chamber was studied. Capillaries and venules were found to be sensitive to argon laser irradiation; functional disturbances of microcirculation were most distinct. Following laser irradiation an active reconstruction of the microcirculatory bed with the redistribution of the blood stream took place along with destruction of the vascular wall and perivascular inflammation.

[Morphological features of the mucosa of the nasal cavity and lacrimal sac in lacrimal passage obstruction].

A comprehensive morphological study of the mucosa of the nasal cavity and lacrimal sac was conducted, by using 160 biopsy specimens taken from 44 patients at endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy. In all cases, different areas of the nasal cavity exhibited abnormal changes that were generalized and appeared as inflammatory, dystrophic, and sclerotic processes.

[Surgical correction of astigmatism using kerato-resection methods].

The authors analyze the results of surgical correction of hypermetropic and mixed astigmatism, carried out by two methods: clinoid resection of the cornea and clinoid resection of the cornea with tangent autoclinoplasty (i. e. implantation of the resected site to the tangent incision in strongly refracting meridian). Surgical technique has been mastered in experiments with isolated eyes and the mechanism of changes in corneal refraction, resultant from its resection, studied. Experiments with rabbit eyes have shown that after corneal resection cicatrization is over by the third month after surgery. 17 operations with classical clinoid resection and 17 ones with that and tangent clinoid autoclinoplasty were carried out in patients with corneal astigmatism of 2.0 to 6.25 diopters, the follow-up periods being from 6 months to 4 years. The mean reduction of astigmatism after the use of the aforesaid methods has made up 2.47 and 4.8 diopters respectively (according to the data of subjective examination of refraction).

[Syndrome of the superior oblique muscle rigidity: clinico-anatomical aspects and results of treatment of 8 patients].

Tenectomy of the superior oblique muscle resulted in complete disappearance of Brown's syndrome in 7 out of 8 children operated on. In view of this, it can be a method of choice in treatment of the syndrome. There was the first clinical case of an additional abnormal attachment of the superior oblique muscle tendon to the sclera. In another patient an abnormal marked vascularization of the tendon identified histologically had the appearance of a muscular structure at the site of the tendon seen at the operation.

[Our initial experience with the surgical correction of astigmatism by sectorial keratorrhaphy].

The authors analyze the first experience with surgical correction of corneal astigmatism by sectorial keratorrhaphy (SKR). The operation consists in sewing an intralamellar nylon (9.00) suture perpendicular to poorly refracting meridian of the cornea. The mechanism of alteration of the corneal curvature resultant from SKR is similar to that in the known wedge-shaped resection of the cornea. The technique of surgery has been mastered in experiments with 12 isolated cadaver eyes. Morphologic studies of 16 eyes of 8 rabbits have lead the authors to a conclusion that prolonged presence of monofilament sutures in the corneal stroma induces the minimal changes in the adjacent tissues, these changes not augmenting over the follow-up period. 15 operations were performed in clinic, the follow-up periods were 4 to 14 mos. The data of the subjective examination of the refraction indicate that corneal astigmatism has reduced by 0.5 to 5.5 diopters, by 2.0-4.0 diopters in the majority of cases. The results evidence that SKR may be used as a method of choice for the surgical correction of hypermetropic or mixed astigmatism.

[Intubation granulomas of the lacrimal ducts in patients with silicone implants].

The results of 315 endonasal operations on the lacrimal duct with long intubation are analyzed. The most incident complication of long intubation of the lacrimal duct is formation of intubation granulomas, which are most often localized in the inferior lacrimal canaliculus; their etiology is sometimes allergic--they form as a response of adjacent tissues to the material of the intubation tube, and the findings of our recent histological study prove it. The diagnosis of intubation granulomas is easy in the majority of cases. The treatment consists in removal and obligatory adequate total and local antiallergic therapy decelerating the growth and relapses of granulomas. After removal of the intubation tube the growth of granulations ceases and a fine cicatrix forms.
