Model of mammalian cell reproductive death. I. Basic assumptions and general equations.

A systemic model describing the major radiobiological effects of various types of radiation is proposed. The model base lines were substantiated, and general mathematical equations for cell survival developed. The model takes into consideration such physical and biological factors as linear energy transfer, ion track structure, and structural and functional organization of interphase chromatin. This paper presents the basic assumptions made and general equations for the cell killing.

Model of mammalian cell reproductive death. II. Comparison with experimental data and discussion.

A general equation for mammalian cell survival has been derived in the previous paper. This paper presents the results of comparison of theoretical evaluations with survival data available from the literature, including different cell lines, variations in linear energy transfer, dose rate and dose fractionation effects and the effects of ultrasoft X-rays and superheavy ions. Merits and demerits of the model are considered in comparison with other models of radiation-induced killing of mammalian cells published in the literature.

[The shape of the absorbed dosage in neutron irradiation of a water phantom].

The paper is concerned with the results of experimental and estimated investigations into the spatial distribution of an absorbed dose and the spectrum of neutrons during irradiation of a water phantom by a P-3 beam of a BP-10 reactor. The ratio of densely ionizing and rarely ionizing components of an absorbed dose as well as the ratios between neutrons of different energetic groups were shown to undergo considerable changes with the penetration of reactor neutrons into the depth of a tissue-equivalent medium. The obtained results serve as basic data in various biomedical investigations using reactor neutron beams, including the planning of their use in cancer therapy.

[The results of research on the biological effects of neutrons].

A study was made of the peculiarities of the biological effect of neutrons as compared to gamma-radiation. A number of biological models were proposed for interpretation of the phenomenon: a biophysical model of mutations and cell inactivation, a model for interpretation of the formation of a radioresistant and radiosensitive fraction.

[Relative biological effectiveness of highly active mixed gamma-neutron 252Cf radiation].

Comprehensive radiobiological studies of the relative biological and genetic efficacy (RBE and RGE) of powerful 252Cf radiation (the ANET-B unit) were conducted using research tools of various radiosensitivity (bacteria, Drosophila, Chinese hamster cells, murine thymocytes, human and murine bone marrow stem cells, human peripheral blood lymphocytes, Lewis lung carcinoma cells). It was shown in the tests of reproductive or interphase death and chromosome aberrations that the RBE and the RGE values of a 252Cf new source varied within the same limits from 1.3 to 3.0 whereas in the tests of gene mutations the RGE of the source did not exceed the efficacy of 60Co gamma-radiation and in some cases it was much lower. Thus the RBE of the new source in induced lethal and chromosome damages was 2-4 times lower than the efficacy of a low-activity 252Cf source used now in radiotherapy.

[Cytogenetic effects induced by neutrons in human peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. I. Dose-effect relationship for different types of chromosome aberrations when exposed to neutrons with different energies].

Human lymphocytes were irradiated in vitro during G0 stage by graded doses of thermal neutrons and of neutrons with mean energy of 0.04; 0.09; 0.35; 0.85 and 14.7 MeV as well as by 60Co gamma-rays. The data were fitted to the linear and linear-quadratic relations. The neutrons of low and intermediate energies showed the linear dependence on the dose, 14.7 MeV neutrons and gamma-rays--a linear-quadratic one, whereas the data obtained with 0.85 MeV neutrons fitted well the both models. Terminal and interstitial deletions produced by both gamma-rays and neutrons showed different dependencies upon the dose. Some qualitative pecularities of aberration spectra were found in the experiments with neutrons as compared with the data on gamma-irradiation: the ratio of exchanges to fragments was greater, and aberrations of chromatid type were produced. The specially designed experiments and calculations showed that the last effect was not connected with induced radioactivity.

[Cytogenetic effects induced in vitro in human peripheral blood lymphocytes by neutrons. II. Relative biological effectiveness of neutrons having different energies].

Human lymphocytes were irradiated in vitro during Go stage by graded doses of thermal neutrons and neutrons having an average energy of 0.04; 0.09; 0.35; 0.85 and 14,7 MeV as well as by 60Co gamma rays, and RBE of neutrons relative to gamma-rays was calculated for the frequency of total and different types of aberrations. It was found that the RBE has the most value at the low doses and decreases when the exposition dose increases. 0.35 MeV neutrons have the maximum RBE in comparison with neutrons having other energies. When comparing the RBE values calculated for different types of chromosome aberrations, it was found out that dicentrics and dicentrics plus centric rings had more RBE than acentric aberrations (pair fragments and minutes).
