[EEG and ENG findings in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and in hemodialysis patients].

In 15 patients with renal insufficiency at the stage of the compensated retention and 13 patients of the chronic haemodialysis programe no relations between clinical findings, maximum motor nerve conduction speed (peroneal nerve, median nerve), visually evaluated EEG and actual metabolic parameters could be statistically secured. During haemodialysis either an increase of the EEG changes increased or the findings remained constant.

[Electromyographic findings in disorders of calcium and potassium metabolism].

The electromyographic findings in disturbances of the calcium and potassium metabolism are discussed. Particularly in the tetanic syndrome the authors deal with the difficulty of the interpretation of the findings. Finally a casuistic report on relapsing paralyses of the muscles in hypopotassiaemia is given.

[Alcohol-induced lesions of the nerve and muscle].

A review is given on the most important neurologic sequelae after long lasting abuse of alcohol. The paper especially deals with the clinical features of neuropathic and myopathic disorders in alcoholics. Electromyography (including electroneurography) is considered to be a major diagnostic aid in these conditions.

[Determination of the variation in conduction speed of motor fibers and the effects of diphenylhydantoin (Phenytoin) and diazepam (Faustan)].

The variation in the speed of conduction of motor fibers of the ulnar nerve was determined by Hopf's double-stimulus method and compared with values obtained from the duration of muscular response potentials for differently spaced points of stimulation. However, the values obtained from the difference of the duration of response potentials are inadequate since the duration of potentials cannot always be determined accurately. After a ten-day administration of faustan (15 mg per day) or phenytoin (300 mg per day) there was observed a decrease especially in the minimum rate of conduction of motor fibers of the ulnar nerve.

[Determination of distal latency of the motor nerves of the hand].

The authors show the methodological problems connected with the determination of distal latency and the possibility of misinterpretation. They recommend the use of concentric needle electrodes together with surface electrodes for the determination of the distal latency of the hand nerves and also to always register both nerves.

[The oculomotor system--simulation of physiologic and pathologic horizontal saccadic eye movements].

Horizontal saccadic eye movements were analyzed by way of the input- and output-functions of the oculomotor system. On the basis of the parameters of the model, it was possible to simulate both physiological and pathological saccades. In this paper we present the results of simulation experiments that were performed to study the influence of various ocular motor disorders. The parameters of the model proved a useful diagnostic aid.

Adaptive mechanisms of saccadic system in diagnostic use.

The possibilities of diagnostic use of saccades are given in pathological eye movements as well as in adaptive mechanisms. They are used to offset the degradation of oculomotor performance resulting from interference along the chain of neural conducting, in neuromuscular transmission and in muscle function. Pharmacological effects can be used to increase the influence of disorders or to detect adaptive mechanisms. During the pharmacological therapy with carbamazepine or diphenylhydantoin, adaptive processes can be measured.
