[Increase in visual field defects under long-term timolol treatment in patients with open-angle glaucoma - observations from an ophthalmology practice].

The authors report on 6 patients with open-angle glaucoma who were treated with Timolol eye drops for 2 years. During this period the intraocular pressure was normal at all times. In spite of this a deterioration in visual fields occurred, in some of the cases associated with reduced vision. It is emphasized that these patients form part of a larger group comprising 30 individuals. In the remaining 24 patients no deterioration of the visual field or vision was found during the 2 years of treatment with Timolol.

[Effect of corticoids on protein concentration in rabbit aqueous humor after argon laser surgery of the iris (author's transl)].

A high dose of corticoid premedication was applicated intramuscularly five hours before laser surgery. Following laser coagulation of the pigmented iris the protein concentration in the aqueous humor was measured every hour. The initial increase in protein concentration was found to be lower than in earlier experiments without premedication. In contrast to earlier results without corticoid premedication, the reaction of the untreated contralateral eye was suppressed.

[Effect of long-term administration of timolol eye drops in open-angle glaucoma (author's transl)].

The authors report on ten patients with unstabilized open-angle glaucoma who were treated for up to six months with Timolol eye drops. A significant lowering of intraocular pressure was recorded throughout the treatment period. There was no evidence of deterioration of visual field or acuity. Subjective tolerance was good except in one patient who suffered temporarily from slight tachycardia.

[Treatment of narrow-angle glaucoma with timolol (author's transl)].

The authors report on seven patients with narrow-angle glaucoma treated for up to six months with Timolol eye drops. Prior to treatment with Timolol the patient's eyes had remained unregulated despite miotics therapy, or it had been impossible to continue with miotics due to subjective intolerance. Timolol eye drops achieved a significant lowering of pressure in all seven patients and satisfactory pressure stabilization was achieved either with Timolol eye drops alone or in combination with pilocarpine or Carbachol eye drops. In one patient who had unregulated glaucoma and who was on Carbachol/acetazolamide therapy, satisfactory stabilization was achieved by additional application of Timolol.

[The significance of fluorescein angiogarphy in ocular toxocara granuloma (author's transl)].

Four serologically-proved cases of intraocular toxocara infections are demonstrated. Three different manifestations in the following way were found: 1. Solitary granuloma on the posterior pole (2 patients). 2. Anterior and posterior uveitis of both eyes with granuloma near the ora (1 patient). 3. Iridocyclitis of both eyes (1 patient). The fluorescein angiography examination in two cases with solitary granuloma have been repeated over a period of time and the relation of the satisfactory results to the further development of the disease is shown.

[Protein concentration in the aqueous humour of the rabbit after argon laser coagulation of the iris (author's transl)].

After coagulation of the iris of pigmented rabbits with argon laser, the protein concentration of the aqueous humour was measured at different times. An initial increase of the protein concentration was found both after low and high intensity coagulation. Already 5 hours later the protein concentration was again low and no further increase could be observed within 28 days. The contralateral untreated eye showed a lower but significant response. High intensity coagulation lead to a more severe reaction.

[Quantitative fluorometry at the ocular fundus (author's transl)].

Description of a videodensitometric method for the quantitative evaluation of fluorescence angiography photographs using the Quantimet 720 image analysis computer system. The clinical value of the new method is demonstrated in a case of central serous retinopathy. With the aid of these measurements the activity of leakage points can be assessed more exactly than by mere subjective inspection of the gained pictures, thus allowing a better control of the effects of a chosen therapy.
