[The significance of tympanometry in pediatric audiometry (author's transl)].

Audiological findings through tympanometry and audiometry were correlated with pathological findings involving the tympanic membranes and the nasopharynx in 232 patients (406 ears) with various hearing disorders in order to determine the probability of a conductive hearing deficit when only tympanogram and clinical findings are known. These measures hold special import to patients in whom exact evaluations of pure tone hearing thresholds are not possible (ie, in small infants and in patients with severe hearing losses in low frequency ranges).

[Adherence phenomena in Trypanosoma congolense (author's transl)].

Two adherence phenomena in Trypanosoma congolense as a possible cause of trypanosome aggregation in the capillaries of certain organs are described: 1. Adherence of trypanosomes to blood cells of nonimmune mice, 2. dovetailing of trypanosome membranes into one another and into the vessel wall.

Side chain oxidation of ifosfamide in man.

Ifosfamide as well as its stable alkylating metabolites namely carboxy-Ifosfamide and two dechloroethylated compounds were determined in the urine of a patient with progredient lung carcinoma who had been treated with 6 g of the drug. Quantitative measurements were carried out using a colorimetric procedure which consists of TL-spectrophotometric determinations on sheets which had previously been sprayed with 4-pyridinaldehyde-2-benzothiazolylhydrazone. In the case investigated the Ifosfamide was found to have been converted largely into two dechloroethylated compounds (48%) and only a small portion of carboxy-Ifosfamide (2.2%).

[Differential diagnosis and follow-up studies in sucklings and infants with continuous cholestasis (author's transl)].

Among liver biopsies from 91 children between the age of 36 hrs and 2 years, puncture or excision was done for clarification in 64 cases. The morphological differential diagnosis between the various forms of intra- and extrahepatic bile duct dysplasias and their define characteristics related to hepatitis is presented. Morphological changes have given the basis for our grouping of diseases with cholestasis in early childhood. Our conclusions were summarized and proved in some schematic tables. Particular emphasis was given to comparative time observations for bioptic examined children over longer periods. Hereby results prognostic knowledge which should stimulate our therapeutic handling.

[Glycoproteins in diabetes mellitus].

Analyses of mucoproteins, orcin-positive protein sugar, sialic acid of the alpha2-macroglobulin, alpha1-glycoprotein, alpha1-antitrypsin, alpha2-HS-glycoprotein and beta2-glycoprotein I were carried out in 302 diabetics. In creases of concentration could be proved for alpha2-macroglobulin, alpha2-HS-glycoprotein, orcin-positive protein sugar and sialic acid. In diabetics with retinopathies the alpha2-macroglobulin concentration is significantly increased compared with diabetics without retinopathies.

Treatment of deep vein thrombosis with streptokinase.

From September 1962 to May 1972 145 patients with acute or subacute deep vein thrombosis confirmed by phlebography were treated with streptokinase. During the same period 42 patients considered unfit for thrombolytic therapy were treated with herapin and oral anticoagulants. The results, assessed by repeat phlebography, in 93 of the patients treated with streptokinase were compared with those in 42 patients treated with heparin. The age, sex, and severity of occlusion were roughly similar in both groups. Streptokinase treatment was successful in 42 per cent, partially successful in 25 per cent, and unsuccessful in 32 per cent of the 93 patients compared with none, 10 per cent, and 88 percent respectively in the 42 patients treated with heparin. Streptokinase was more effective when the thrombus was in proximal rather than calf veins. Thrombi of more than six days old were readily lysed. Plasma fibrinogen levels were below 0-8 g/1 (80 mg/100 ml) in nearly all patients successfully treated. The incidence of pulmonary embolism was no greater with streptokinase than with heparin treatment. Only prolonged follow-up would show whether thrombolytic treatment would be effective in preventing late complications of deep vein thrombosis such as chronic venous insufficiency.

Metabolism of trichloroethylene in man. III. Interaction of trichloroethylene and ethanol.

Volunteers inhaled a constant concentration of 50 ppm trichloroethylene (Tri) for 6 hrs per day on 5 consecutive days. Simultaneous ethanol (EtOH) ingestion (blood level 0.6%) inhibits the metabolization of Tri to trichloroethanol (TCE) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) by 40% on the average. Oxidation of Tri to TCA does not occur as long as EtOH is present. During this time period the blood Tri-concentration increases 2 1/2-fold, that in the expired air rising 4-fold, as compared to Tri inhalation without EtOH. TCE glucuronidation is not subject to inhibition. On concurrent inhalation of Tri, the EtOH and acetaldehyde levels are slightly increased over the control values without Tri. The mechanisms underlying the alternate inhibition of mixed-function oxygenases and aldehyde dehydrogenase on simultaneous intake of Tri and EtOH are discussed. The intolerance reaction occurring on combined exposure to Tri and EtOH can be interpreted as an accumulation of Tri in the CNS resulting from the complete depression of Tri oxidation.

Esterase D: some population and formal genetical data.

562 healthy blood donors and 65 families with 149 offspring were types for esterase D (EsD). The observed allele frequencies are in good agreement with those determined in other Caucasian populations. The rare variant EsD3 was found in a blood donor who transmitted it to his daughter. The observed segregation ratios in our family material showed no deviation from expectation.

[Vergleichende Untersuchungen mit (14c)5-Aminolävulinat und (14c)Uroporphyrinogen (author's transl)].

Cell-free extracts from Clostridium tetanomorphum, a microorganism which synthesizes corrins but no heme, are capable of converting both 5-aminolevulinate and uroporphyrinogen III into cobyrinic acid. Comparative examinations with (14C)5-aminolevulinate and (14C)uroporphyrinogen yielded corresponding results. Cell-free extracts from Clostridium tetanomorphum contain uroporphyrinogen III. To obtain good radiochemical yields it is therefore necessary to use substrates of high specific radioactivity. A method for the preparation of 14C-labelled uroporphyrin I-IV with high specific radioactivity is described.

[The morphology of a nocardia asteroides-bacteriophage (author's transl)].

The morphology of a new bacteriophage isolated from Nocardia asteroides has been investigated by negative staining. The percent results suggest a model which is valid for many phages. The head of the bacteriophage has the shape of an icosaeder with a diameter of about 420 AU. It probably contains a spherical core which is surrounded by a capsid of 15 AU thickness. A flexible non-contractible tail is connected by a collar to one of the head's edges. Its length is about 1400 AU and its diameter 60 AU. The tail shows a cross striation with a periodicity of 40 AU and a channel. At the distal side it passes over into a conical end structure. Conforming this morphological criteria the new bacteriophage belongs to the group B of Bradley.

Profuse fimbriae conferring O-inagglutinability to several strains of S. typhi-murium and S. enteritidis isolated from pasta products. Cultural, morphological, and serological experiments.

During the last 2 years several O-inagglutinable Salmonella strains were isolated from pasta products the typing of which presented great difficulties. Serological and morphological tests (by electron microscope) revealed a fimbrial antigen which was thermolabile to a certain degree. This antigen represents (in corroboration of J.P. Dugiud) a special type of fimbriae of Salmonella and is morphologically different from type 1 and typ3-2 fimbriae previously described. It is probably an abnormal mutant form of fimbriae. Morphologically characteristic are its very much finer structure of filaments (2,7 nm) (Type-1 and type-2 of fimbriae measure in the range 6-8 nm.) and the 2,7 nm) (Type-1 and type-2 of fimbriae measure in the range 6-8 nm.). and the 2,7 nm) (Tpe-1 and type-2 aof fimbriae measure in the range 6-8 nm.) and the 2,7 nm) (Tpe-1 and type-2 of fimbriae measure in the range 6-8 nm.) and the large number of filamentous appendages...

[About the influence of body posture on the result of acoustical examinations (author's transl)].

Effect of socalled tonic reflexes on central processing of acoustic stimuli was studied by stimulating the patterns of tonic reflexes in 18 adults with normal hearing abilities. The parameters were: hearing threshold level, acoustical stapedius reflex and slow auditory evoked potential. Only in three positions-corresponding to the symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR) and tonic labyrinthine reflex in supine and prone position a hearing threshold shift of 1 dB could be observed. The level of the stapedius reflex showed an increase of 5 dB in one of these three positions. In the acoustical evoked slow potential only the amplitude but not the latency was influenced. In some cases we found an increase of amplitude, in others a decrease or even a complete suppression. In using ERA to evaluate possible auditory disturbances in children with cerebral palsy it seems necessary to consider these possible influences on the evoked potential.
