[Inhibition of mouse-killing behavior by rats with taurine, GABA, and its analogues].

The injection of Gaba, of taurine or of a structural analog of GABA (n-dipropylacetate) in the olfactive bulb of "killer" Rats was found to inhibit the mouse-killing behaviour of the rat. The same effect was obtained when taurine or n-dipropylacetate (which increases GABA in the central nervous system), was injected intraperitoneally. The experiments reported here are interpreted to explain certain molecular mechanisms of muricidal behaviour.

Effects of acute morphine administration on the catecholamine metabolism of three strains of mice.

Inbred mouse strains exhibit differences in motor activity and brain catecholamine metabolism after acute morphine injection. The two strains C57BL/6J and Balb/cJ, which increased motor activity after morphine present also an increased noradrenaline turnover in the pons medulla, whereas no difference were found in the DBA/2J strain whose motor activity was unchanged. A correlation seems to exist between motor activity and the noradrenaline metabolism in the brain stem.

MSA-35: a protein identified by human autoantibodies that colocalizes with microtubules.

We have identified a putative 35-kilodalton protein that colocalizes with microtubules and displays a unique spatial and temporal distribution during the cell cycle of HeLa cells. This protein has been given the designation MSA-35. MSA-35 first appears in association with microtubules and centrosomes of interphase cells exhibiting centrosome separation as a prelude to cell division. This protein is found in conjunction with kinetochore microtubules throughout their appearance. MSA-35 transiently associates with interpolar microtubules following anaphase and the pattern of MSA-35 reactivity in telophase cells suggests that there are at least seven domains within the intercellular bridge. The distribution of MSA-35 during and following recovery from mitotic arrest with nocodazole suggest that it is also present at low levels in interphase cells, can associate with interphase centrosomes, and colocalizes with nascent microtubules. The complex spatial and temporal distribution of MSA-35 indicates that it may be necessary for a series of events in the mitotic process such as the bundling of microtubules.

Postoperative cellulitis of the foot and lower leg following coronary bypass.

Greater saphenous vein grafts are standardly used for coronary artery bypass grafting. Recurrent acute cellulitis of the saphenous vein-donor extremity is an infrequently reported complication. The authors present a protocol designed to reduce the incidence of the recurrent cellulitis through proper preoperative assessment and postoperative management.
