Experimental induction of puberty in the infantile female rhesus monkey.

Normal ovulatory menstrual cycles were initiated in prepubertal female rhesus monkeys by the infusion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone for 6 minutes once every hou;. When this regimen was discontinued, the animals promptly reverted to an immature state. These findings permit the conclusion that neither adenohypophysial nor ovarian competence is limiting in the initiation of puberty and suggest that this process depends on the maturation of the neuroendocrine control system that directs the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus.

Concentration of IgG1 and IgG2a allotypes in serum of nude and normal allotype-congenic mice.

BALB/c (C) and C57BL/6 (B6) allotype--congenic strains of mice (C, C.B, B6, B6.C) were made congenitally anthymic by the introduction of the mutant nude gene (nu). The resulting nude mice (C.nu, C.B.nu, B6.nu and B6.C.nu) were found to produce highly variable quantities of IgG1 and IgG2a. Whether these mice showed high, normal, or low quantities of IgG1 or IgG2a relative to their normal counterparts depended on their age and genetic background. In all nude mice, IgG1 production appeared more sensitive to the loss of T cells than did IgG2a production. An extreme example of this was the deficiency of IgG1 but not IgG2a in adult B6.nu and B6.C.nu mice. Substantial quantities of both IgG1 and IgG2a were found in adult C.nu and C.B.nu mice.

Recruitment for the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial.

A preliminary account of some aspects of recruitment for the Coronary Primary Prevention Trial is provided. Extension of recruitment sources to include various forms of community screening resulted in more rapid acquisition of potential participants than was possible when recruitment was restricted to the more traditional sources of physician and laboratory referral. Extended recruitment was supported by augmented data feedback and by the development of the job of recruitment coordinator at each participating clinic. The identification of delays in reaching the maximal recruitment rate from particular sources points to the need for detailed planning of a recruitment campaign before large-scale clinical trials are begun.

Objective assessment of hypnotically induced time distortion.

The objective precision of operant conditioning methodology validates the power of hypnosis to induce alterations in time perception. Personal tempo was systematically modified by instructions to trained hypnotic subjects, with significant behavioral effects observed on a variety of response rate measures.

Spontaneous urinary chemiluminescence and diet. An intervention study in humans.

Spontaneous urinary visible chemiluminiscence has been measured in samples from a diet intervention study in humans. For a month, two groups, each of 21 male volunteers, received either a Mediterranean-type diet or an occidental (high-fat) diet. Urinary chemiluminescence levels (in 10(3) cpm) were 8.5 +/- 3.1 and 6.0 +/- 2.0 for the high-fat and Mediterranean-type diets, respectively. The differences obtained were statistically significant. These results reflect differences in the oxidative stress associate to both diets and support the proposal that spontaneous urinary chemiluminiscence constitutes a complementary index of systemic oxidative stress.
