Relationship between mandibular deviation and ocular convergence.

Recent studies have confirmed the relationship between head posture, mandibular position and visual focusing. A case-controlled study was conducted to assess the occurrence of ocular convergence defects between subjects with functional mandibular latero-deviation and healthy subjects in pediatric age. Sixty subjects (the study group) presented mandibular latero-deviation classified as functional according to the use of a clinical examination and frontal and basal tele-radiography. Sixty subjects without functional mandibular laterodeviation (control group) were selected randomly from all subjects seeking pediatric dental care and matched by gender and age to study group. All one hundred and twenty subjects were submitted to orthoptic tests performed by the same operator. These results seemed to confirm that in mandibular latero-deviation subjects ocular convergence defects occurred in greater frequency than in controls underlining the importance of role of pediatric dentistry among interdisciplinary cooperation.

Psychological aspects in paediatric dentistry: parental presence.

AIM: The scope of the present study has been the analysis of the main psychological approaches used during a first dental visit of a child to gain the necessary collaboration, focusing on the influence of parental presence during the visit. METHODS: The study was conducted on a group of 200 children divided into two sub-groups. In Group I the child was seen without the parent's presence and in Group II the parent was present throughout the visit. Assessment of behaviour was by a simple 'co-operative' or 'non-cooperative' in achieving a dental examination and prophylaxis. Statistical analysis was made by chi square and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: In Group I (parent out) 89% of children were fully co-operative compared with 63% in Group II (parent present) which was significantly different (chi square 18.503, p<0.001). In addition 8% of children in Group II failed to return for any further dental care compared with 1% in Group I, which was also significantly different (Fisher's exact test p=0.1231). CONCLUSION: Parental presence affects a child's behaviour on an initial dental visit, which is better when the parent is excluded.

Chemical and pharmacological shaping of necrotic primary teeth.

AIM: The object of this study was the evaluation of the success rate of endodontic treatment of primary teeth with necrotic pulps performed through a partial pulpectomy and a chemical shaping. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 50 necrotic primary molars, with an oral fistula and a clinical and radiographical positive diagnosis. On each tooth the endodontic treatment was performed through mechanical strumentation for only 2-3 mm beyond the orifices of the canals and copious alternate irrigation with 10vol H(2)O(2) and 3% NaOCl (chemical shaping). After the pharmacological shaping the canals were filled with a slurry mix of powdered macrolide antibiotic (josamicina) and glycerine (or anaesthetic solution). At the second visit the same procedure was either repeated, if an oral fistula was still present, or the canals were sealed with a small amount of josamicina and glycerine paste and zinc oxide eugenol to a working length. RESULTS: The overall success rate, considering the first two teeth that were extracted as inappropriate case selection, was 45 out of the original 48 or 93%. While considering all the teeth treated the success rate was 45 out of 50, or 90%.
