Extent of recovery of function after early sensory deprivation in the rat.

In two experiments the performances of 90- and 150-day-old light-reared and dark-reared rats were compared on rigorous tests of depth and form discriminative abilities. Significant differences due to rearing and age were found. Exposure to a normal light environment for 60 days was found to partially alter the effects of an early 90-day period of visual deprivation in the case of depth discrimination but to have little impact in the case of form discrimination. The implications of the results are discussed with regard to the proposition that the initial deficits in the performance of the dark-reared rats and the extent of recovery of function after exposure to a normal environment are related to the kind of perceptual ability being measured and to the sensitivity of the test.

Scalp carriage of Pityrosporum species: the effect of physiological maturity, sex and race.

The change in carriage rates of Pilyrosporum sp. over the years before and after puberty were studied in Caucasoid and Negroid children using a semiquantitative cultural technique. Caucasoids yielded yeasts more often than did negroids; older or sexually mature children yielded yeasts more often than did prepubertal children. There appeared to be a decrease in numbers of yeasts isolated a few years after the pubertal peak.

[Tinea capitis in school children in London].

An account is given of the increase in incidence of scalp ringworm seen in London school children over a twelve year period. The increase was accompanied by the isolation of a greater variety of species of dermatophytes some of which are not indigenous to Britain, such as Trichophyton soudanense. Four main radical groups of children were investigated and the distribution of the fungi causing scalp infections among them determined.

Karyotypes of oval cell forms of Malassezia furfur.

Karyotypes of different morphological forms of oval cell types of Malassezia furfur (previously called Pityrosporum ovale) were examined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. All strains produced patterns containing seven chromosome bands. These patterns could be separated into three distinct groups, which appeared to correlate with groups based on morphology.
