The aim of this work is to describe a case of necrotising enteritis as a first presentation of a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The patient has undergone two laparatomies with resection of a part of the small intestine because of a clinically relevant intestinal obstruction. Distended intestinal loops, inflammed serosa and mesenterial lymphadentis have been found during the operations. The histological examination has proved phlegmonous enteritis with hyperplasia of the lymph follicles and infiltration with plasmocytes, lymphocytes and eosinophils. Numerous biochemical, immunological, microbiological, ultrasound and X-ray investigations have not been helpful for the diagnosis. The appearance of a nephrotic syndrome in the course of the disease and the consequent renal biopsy have led to confirmation of the diagnosis SLE. The immunosupressive and corticosteroid treatment have resulted in fully recovery of the patient.
A new type of system is made for determination of chemical pollutants in the air--indicator tubes with noncylindrical indicator filling--a subject of invention. The effect of the noncylindrical form on the metrological characteristics of the indicator tubes is studied. The noncylindrical filling is a way to influence these characteristics without changing the chemical receipt. There are a number of advantages: increasing more of 10x the sensitivity; linearization of the logarithmic characteristics of the indication dusts; possibility to lay two contrary scales on the conical indicator tubes for sucking respectively from the one or the other side of the asymmetric indicator filling, thus realising opportunities for defining of very low or very high accuracy. A new type of sampling system is established in practice. The dependences are given graphically.
Studied was the relation of the subclinical, recurring, and chronic rumen acidosis, on the one hand, to the disturbed function, resp., injuries of the liver, on the other. Experiments were carried out with a total of 862 high-producing cows, 54 out of which had massive injuries of the liver. Full clinical examination was performed, 22 of the animals being subject to laboratory investigations with regard to the rumen content (pH, infusorial count per 1 cm3 with the differentiation of bacteria, activity with regard to glucose, nitrates, sedimentation, and flotation), blood (whole blood picture, coagulation tests, bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, serum aldolase, alkaline phosphatase, alkaline reserves, blood sugar), and urine (pH, protein, ketone bodies, sugar, and CSR). It is concluded that three inferences could be drawn, pointing to the relation between recurring rumen acidosis and the liver diseases.
The toxic action of the carbamide preparation isoproturon-50 was followed up after oral administration at a single dose rate of 3600 mg per kg body mass. Studied were also the clinical picture, body temperature, pulse rate and respiratory excursions, appetite, general behaviour and such biochemical indices as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, carotene, vitamin A, blood sugar, total protein, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase.
Twelve sheep, divided into two groups of 6 animals each, were used. The first (test) group was offered herbazin -50 with the feed in the course of 90 days after which the animals were infected via the joints with Corynebacterium pyogenes. The second (control) group was also infected with the same pathogen in the same way. During the time the preparation was given and 30 days post infection the animals were kept under observation, following up their clinical, condition, and the occasional morphological and biochemical changes taking place in the blood and the immunobiologic responsiveness. It was found that sheep treated with herbazin -50 with a following infection with Corynebacterium pyogenes raised their blood levels of sugar, total protein, potassium, sodium, magnesium, SGOT, SGPT, and manifested an increased ESR, and lower calcium, inorganic phosphorus, carotene, vitamin A, and cholesterine serum level. It was also established that surgical infections brought about through such introduction of C. pyogenes developed much more rapidly and ran a much more severe course in sheep after the preliminary treatment with herbazin -50. It is believed that they emerged after suppressing the immunologic responsiveness with the use of the preparation.
Studied were a total of 480 high-producing cows to determine the signs of highest information value by which the animals could be divided into groups of normal ones and such of animals presenting various metabolic disturbances: osteomalacia, ketosis, and liver dystrophia. Used were as many as 25 qualitative signs as established through the anamnesis and the clinical and paraclinical investigations. It was found that by means of 8 of these signs only (age, erythrocytes, blood sugar, vitamin A, carotene, total protein, total bilirubin in the blood serum, and pH of the urine), employing a linear discriminant function formed with them one could properly diagnose the disease condition of 83 per cent of all investigated animals. It was also established that the increase on the number of signs to form the linear discriminant function did not lead to an essential change in the preciseness of diagnosis.
Studied were 12 cows with protracted, recurrent acidosis of the rumen, 4 cows with alkalosis, and 2 calves with experimental acidosis, following up the changes in the rumen content and their impact on the liver. The diseased animals were investigated both clinically and by laboratory tests with regard to alkaline phosphatase, plasma cholinesterase, SGOT, SGPT, alkali reserves, bilirubin, blood sugar, protein function of the liver (flocculation tests), biopsy of the liver, urine pH, urobilinogen, sedimentation test and ketone bodies, rumen pH, rumen infusoria, glucose-fermenting and cellulose-digesting activity, breakdown of nitrates, butyric acid, and ammonia gas. It was found that recurrent physiologic deviations of the rumen content play an essential pathogenetic role in liver injury. The more substantial and continuous the deviations the more severe the liver diseases. Studies revealed that along with other factors the recurrent acidosis and alkalosis of the rumen content could be claimed to be an immediate cause of the liver diseases in high producing cows. Histologically, the liver of cows with slightly expressed acidosis of the rumen showed granular degeneration, and of cows with protracted acidosis--fatty degeneration, activation of the reticulo-endothelial system, and leukocytes in the capillar sinusoids. Liver biopsy in the case of experimental acidosis demonstrated also decrease in the glycogen content of the hepatocytes.
The current status of problems, referrable to the use of industrial gas masks, is reviewed, with special reference to the type of sorbent to be used, the pathways of gas mask modernization in respect of the sorbents used, and the modern trends in adsorption cartridge manufacturing; decrease of weight, alleviated construction, adjustment to serve definite toxico-chemical agent, use of ion-exchange resins and hemosorbents. Aspects are discussed for producing sorbents, permitting visual registration of filter mass exhaustion, i.e. sorbents wtih alternating color in the process of sorption, with the purpose of increasing gas mask security and efficiency. The physico-chemical parameters of reference hemosorbent samples with alternating color in the process of sorption were compared with those of widely used sorbents - active carbon (specially processed and crude) and ion-exchange resins: relative dynamics, aktivity protection time, weight, mass activity, etc. Inferences are drawn from which one may see, that these new hemosorbents are highly perspektive, and their industrial acceptance is justifiable.
Studied were the changes in the nitrate-nitrite content of maize grown on areas treated with herbazine-50 and artificial nitrogen fertilizers. The chemical analysis of various parts of the plant (stem. leaves, flowers and grains) revealed that the content of nitrates and nitrites was highest in the ears, and lowest in the leaves. Highest was also the content of nitrates and nitrites in all parts of the plant in maize from areas treated with herbazine-50 at the rate of 4 kg of a. i. per hectare as well as with artificial nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate and superphosphate at 450 kg/ha), followed by maize obtained from areas where ammonium nitrate and superphosphate at 450 kg/ha were introduced only. Slightly lower amounts of nitrates and nitrites were found in maize from areas treated with herbazine-50 at 4 kg/ha only, and lowest was their content in maize from areas that were neither fertilized nor treated with herbazine-50.
Studied were the changes in some clinical and paraclinical indices in sheep treated with the triazine preparation herbazin-50 used at the rate of 1.4 mg per kg of live weight. The effect was also followed up of this dose on the course of pregnancy, the general health status of the newborn lambs, and the deposition of the preparation in the liver and the musculature of the fetus.
The investigation on Bac. thuringiensis toxines applied orally and subcutaneously on experimental white mice and on sheep proved that high doses of the dipel endotoxin are most toxic for mice of all strains (No. 862, 2E, 171) and spores and crystals of strain ND-1 used in dipel injection. The endotoxin of strain 862 applied orally to sheep at a dose of 10 cm3/kg body weight caused slight changes only to some paraclinical indices, namely: total protein, carotene, etc. Exotoxin had none or only slight toxic effect. The remaining strains applied to high doses proved almost harmless to mice.
Studied were the morphologic changes in the viscera of 14 sheep and 2 goats experimentally intoxicated via the oral administration of simasin at various rates. The gross lesions consisted of catarrhal and hemorrhagic typhlitis, liver dystrophia, and enlargement of the gallbladder. Histologically, the acute cases presented granular degeneration of the liver and kidneys, oedema of the lungs, fatty infiltration of the myocardium, oedema, hyperemia, and hemorrhages in the brain. In the cases of chronic intoxication there were fatty degeneration of the liver as well as dystrophic changes in the testes, cerebrum, and cerebellum and diffuse granular degeneration of the kidney. Chronic intoxication of sheep with simasin at 1.4 and 3.0 mg per kilogram led to hypofunction of the thyroid; doses of 6.0 and 25 mg kg caused colloid struma while acute toxicity with 250 mg/kg (once and twice treated animals) caused parenchymal struma. A drop in the content of liver glycogen and degranulation of the mastocytes of the mesentery were also observed.
Development of fibromuscular hyperplasia of the intima (intimal thickening) as a characteristic reparative reaction of the intimal tissue was found in the carotid artery and abdominal aorta after an increased mechanical loading during experimental stenosis by means of optical and electronic microscopic examinations of the arterial wall. In children, whose death was caused by rheumatism at various phases of the disease in the coronary artery there was also focal diffuse intimal hyperplasia. Both in the experimental and in the rheumatic injuries of the arteries in the thickened intima there was more scarce infiltration with plasmatic proteins and lipids were discovered. An inference was made for interferention of serum insudation with collagenous synthesis in the damaged and reparative thickening of the arterial intima.
