[Tissue specificity of testosterone fixation: demonstrated by ultrastructural immunocytochemistry after cryoultramicrotomy].

Testosterone can be detected by immunocytochemistry on ultrathin slices obtained by cryoultramicrotomy. Testosterone detected by this method is likely bound on a binding site having a high affinity. In order to study the tissue specificity of this binding, testosterone was tested in Rat pituitary gland, liver and adrenal glands. Immunoreactive testosterone was detected in the gonadotropic cells of the pituitary gland, in the hepatocytes. Testosterone was not detected by immunocytochemistry in the pituitary cells other than the gonadotropic cells and in the cells of the medulla of adrenal glands. These data testify in favour of tissue specificity of the testosterone binding.

One stage femoral lengthening.

Femoral lengthening can be obtained by a technique using a Z osteotomy and a distraction device separate from the operative field. The expected gain in length is 3-3.5 cm in children, 4-4.5 cm in adults. Sustained flexion of the knee during the procedure prevents vascular and nervous complications. One peroneal nerve and 2 femoral nerve palsies were nevertheless observed in 180 cases of the whole series. These were caused by a failure to comply with technical details. Bony union occurs promptly in young children. Pseudarthrosis occurred 11 times in patients more than 16-years-old, and once in an 8-year-old child. Avascular necrosis of the bone fragments after total separation of the soft tissue from the femoral shaft explains the frequency of non-union after the age of skeletal maturity. Faster and sound union in adolescents and adults is obtainable by the use of decortication to exposure the femur and strong internal fixation. The best indication for this method is a moderate discrepancy allowing a safe and complete equalization of limb length.

[Study of a "Rickettsiella" (Rickettsia) pathogen of the spider "Pisaura mirabilis" (author's transl)].

A rickettsiella-like organism has been described in the spider Pisaura mirabilis Cl., and placed into the genus Rickettsiella on the basis of its cycle and ultrastructure. A chlamydial cycle takes place in the digestive cells and becomes more complex in the interstitial cells where giant bodies appear. The latter have been considered up to now as caracteristic of the genus Rickettsiella but, in fact, seem to be in relation with the metabolism of the parasitized cell. Consequently their presence and structure can no longer be retained as specific characters. A study of the host and tissue specificity of the various Rickettsiella actually known must be defined forehand the impact of the metabolism of host cells on the appearance and structure of these bodies.

[Karyometry of thymic reticular cells in the rat. Effect of hydrocortisone and adrenalectomy].

A new process in taxinomic analysis clearly confirmed the presence of three different types of cells (epithelial, hypertrophic and mesenchymal) in the reticular zone of the thymus. The injection of hydrocortisol as well as adrenalectomy induced specific changes in nuclear surfaces of three cell types, while hydrocortisol tented to increase the surface of epithelial and mesenchymal cells, adrenalectomy reduced it, while a modification was seen in the percentages relative of the cell types. In adrenalectomized animals, the effect result was counteracted by injections of hydrocortisol.

Adrenalectomy

[Lamellar coxitis. Apropos of 30 cases].

The authors have studied 30 cases of acute necrosis of articular cartilage complicating slipped capital femoral epiphysis. They recall the main features of this condition: stiffness and narrowing of the joint space. They analyse the importance of the degree of slipping and of the type of treatment in the aetiology of this complication. Weight bearing should be suppressed as early as possible, for a long period of time. However early signs of degenerative arthrosis were found in most of the hips.

[A cytoplasmic virus in the scorpion Buthus occitanus Amoreux].

Isometric virus particles, 60 nm in diameter, have been isolated from diseased scorpions. The virus is pathogenic after ingestion. Its morphogenesis occurs in the cytoplasm of hepatopancreas cells which are totally destroyed at the end of the disease.

Animals

[Hypothalamo-hypophysial-thymic axis in the rat].

Thymic extracts, with proved immunologic properties, decrease, in vitro, RNA and DNA synthesis of hypothalamic fragments of adult rat and have no effect on hypophysis culture; we found a similar action in vivo. Growth hormone inhibits the nucleic acids synthesis of thymic fragments; no action is found with hypothalamic extracts. Hypothesis, that thymic activity is dependent on hypophysis with retroaction on hypothalamus, is discussed.

[Immunologic comparison between some Wolbachiae and research of antigentic community with other members of the order of Rickettsiales].

The antigenic relationship between some rickettsiae of arthropods, which do not transmit germs pathogenic to vertebrates was investigated by agglutination and immunofluorescence techniques. The comparison of R. melolonthae, R. tipulae, R. cetonidarum, R. grylli and of the rickettsiae of the scorpion Buthus occitanus shows that the Wolbachiae are divided into three serological groups. The insect crystallogen rickettsiae belong to the first group, R. grylli and the scorpion Rickettsia are antigenically distinct (tables I and II). No antigenic relationship was found between these arthropod microorganisms and the following agents of vertebrate rickettsioses and chlamydioses : historical typhus, murine typhus, pustulous fever, Q-fever, epizootic absortion of sheep and psittacosis (tables III and IV). Bacteria of OX2 and OX19 strain of P. vulgaris when mixed with anti-Wolbachiae serums of I, II, III groups, give a negative Weil a Felix reaction. The OXK Proteus are however agglutinated by 4 out of 6 rabbit anti-Rickettsiella serums of the group. This fact calls for a further investigation regarding the comparison of these Rickettsiella with various strains of R. tsutsugamushi.
