[Circadian rhythm of human lymphocyte subpopulations].

Circadian rhythm of lymphocyte subsets was investigated in four healthy subjects, males, aged 35-58 years old. After a period of ambiental synchronization, venous blood samples were taken during a span of a day at 0.00 a.m., 4.00 a.m., 8.00 a.m., noon, 4.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. Lymphocyte subsets (OKT3, OKT4, OKT8, OKB7, OKJa1) were determined by monoclonal antibodies method, and serum level of cortisol by radioimmunoassay method. The OKT4/OKT8 ratio was also calculated. Data were analyzed by chronograms (mean +/- 1SD) and by cosinor method. Results show a significant circadian rhythm for each lymphocyte subset and for serum cortisol levels. The lowest levels of all circulating subsets were seen between noon and 4.00 p.m. and the highest levels around midnight, inversely related with the circadian rhythm of serum cortisol. The OKT4/OKT8 ratio, on the contrary, was relatively constant during the day, without a significant circadian rhythm. These observations have laboratoristic, clinical, and therapeutic implications and should be considered in the course of immunological studies.

[Giant carotid-cavernous aneurysm treated by balloon catheter].

The AA. report the case of a giant carotid cavernous aneurysm; clinical onset was a VI cranial nerve paralysis, and diagnosis was based upon CT and angiographic findings. They describe balloon catheter technique used to exclude aneurysm, followed by carotid ligature. They eventually emphasize radiologic and neurophysiologic studies, and clinical follow up months later.

[Computerized tomography in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome].

The AA. have employed CT scan in studying the latest 10 cases in a series of 50 carpal tunnel syndromes; CT scans have then been confronted with EMGs and surgical findings. Usefulness of CT scan is enhanced in pre and postoperative study of this pathology.

Circadian variation of aldosterone urinary excretion in idiopathic hypertension.

Daily variations of the urinary aldosterone excretion have been studied in 8 hypertensive and in 4 normotensive women. The examined subjects did not receive any drug for at least two weeks before the study and were under the same standardized life-conditions. The urine samples were collected every 3 h for two consecutive days. Population mean cosinor analysis by Halberg did not yield a statistically significant rhythm of aldosterone urinary excretion in the hypertensive group. Further investigation of the temporal structure of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is therefore necessary.

Electrolyte urinary excretion in hypertensive conditions.

Daily variations of electrolyte excretion have been studied in 8 hypertensive and in 4 normotensive women by collecting urine samples every 3 h for a 48-h span. After noticing the absence of a statistically significant circadian rhythm in the hypertensive group, the Authors suggest the hypothesis that a prolonged treatment with diuretic drugs may cause kidney troubles and suppress the circadian rhythm of urinary electrolyte excretion. The Authors conclude affirming that this hypothesis needs further investigation to allow a better chronotherapy of the hypertensive disease in the future.

Essential hypertension, chronobiological study of the circadian variations in urinary excretion of free catecholamines.

Arterial blood pressure and urinary free catecholamine excretion of 8 hypertensive and 4 normotensive women have been evaluated by 3-h interval samples for 2 consecutive days. After noticing the effects of sleep on the arterial blood pressure and on the daily variation of urinary free catecholamine excretion, the authors examined the possible different role of the adrenergic system in hypertensive subjects.

[Lumbosacral extraspinal ependymomas. Review of literature and report of an operated case].

The extradural lumbosacral localization represents for ependymomas an exceptional event full of interest both from an etiopathogenetic point of view and from a clinical one. Extradural ependymomas develop in two characteristic sites: with an anterior or presacral expression in the retro-rectal pelvic area; posterior in the intergluteal space below the lumbo-sacral fascia. The possibilities of a correct diagnosis are based essentially on radiographical examinations and CAT which supply useful factors, but not peculiar to the lesion. The Authors describe a case of posterior "extradural lumbo-sacral ependymomas" which is added to the 36 already reported.

Dental agenesis in hemifacial microsomia.

Hemifacial microsomia (HM) is an asymmetrical congenital deformity of the head and face caused by anomalous development of the structures derived from the first and second branchial arches. This study evaluates the incidence of agenesis and dental inclusions in HM patients. Sixty-three HM patients, 27 male and 36 female, ranging from 7 to 43 years had monolateral (61) and bilateral (2) presentation. From clinical examination, photographs, and various radiographs, the following manifestations were noted: 11 patients had tooth agenesis with at least one on affected side and 5 patients had dental inclusions. The greater the severity of HM, the greater likelihood of agenesis. Third molars were most commonly missing. Dental inclusions did not show a relationship to severity.
