Fibrin adhesive proved to be useful in the reattachment of chondral and osteochondral fragments. Its use is based on sound biological principles. It offers a number of advantages over internal fixation; it causes no further damage to the cartilage, even small chondral fragments can be reattached and a second operation for the removal of metalwork is unnecessary. Its bonding strength provides only contact stability, so that immobilization in plaster for 3 weeks is always necessary. In the last 5 years we have used fibrin adhesive in 28 patients for the fixation of 39 chondral or osteochondral fragments. Of these, 26 cases were followed up for periods of 6 months to 5 years. Twelve patients were examined arthroscopically; 9 of them showed complete healing of the fragments, and only 3 slight localized degenerative changes. In 15 cases we were able to see radiological healing. All except two showed union of the fragments and restoration of the joint surface. In view of our results fibrin adhesive can be recommended for the operative management of cartilage injuries.

In comparative investigations under standardized conditions, the gonococcus culture systems distributed by Miles GmbH, Orion Diagnostica GmbH, and Röhm Pharma GmbH were examined with regard to their usefulness for cultural diagnosis of gonorrhea in general practice. It was shown that because of substantial imperfections Microcult GC (Miles) is not suitable for the diagnosis of gonorrhea. Since microorganisms were grown on Biocult (Orion) and Gono-Nährböden (Röhm) which may cause a false-positive diagnosis, as well as microorganisms that may cause a false-negative diagnosis, these products are only of limited value for the venerologist in practice.

During the 1967-1973 period, the authors followed up the circulation of various Salmonella serotypes and found new serotypes linked to the particular epidemiologic aspects recorded within a small district, without highly populated centers. The results showed a steady increase in the strains isolated during the last 3--4 years. Among the total 2103 strains isolated, S. panama, S. typhimurium and S. bredeney were predominant. The number of serotypes isolated varied between 10 (1968--1969) and 16 (1972). Salmonella strains were incriminated in the etiology of a fairly high proportion of the acute digestive disorders.
