The ovarian renin-angiotensin system. A paracrine-intracrine regulator of ovarian function.

We present a review that considers the regulation of ovarian function by the ovarian renin-angiotensin system. Evidence is presented that shows the ovarian renin-angiotensin system can regulate normal ovarian function by paracrine and intracrine mechanisms. In addition, the complexity that is inherent in the renin-angiotensin system conferred by multiple biological angiotensin peptides and multiple receptors is discussed. Evidence that a dysfunctional OVRAS induces ovarian pathology such as polycystic ovarian disease is also presented.

Muscle activity during shoulder dislocation.

EMG activity from eight shoulder muscles in parallel was recorded from 4 patients with generalized joint laxity. During external rotation of the humerus in 45 degrees abduction, humeroscapular dislocation occurred in 2 patients and subluxation in the 2 others. The activity level in the subscapularis was low, and the activation speed was slow. The low muscle activity and delay in activation of the subscapularis muscle may contribute to the instability.

[Results of irradiation using different radiation sources in the treatment of malignant parotid tumors].

Patients with malignant parotid tumors were treated at two different centres with slightly ionizing radiation (110 patients) and neutron therapy (15 patients). The treatment results are compared. The principles of comparison applied in this analysis are identical. The histologic classification was made according to the W.H.O. recommendation of 1972 and the staging according to Becske. Local tumor control is the criterion applied in the comparative assessment of both methods. The analysis has shown that there is no significant difference in the treatment results within the individual stages of tumor's advancement after application of an orthovolt therapy and a telecobalt therapy. Patients treated in early stages (stages I and III) had a substantially higher rate of local tumor control (72%) than patients in advanced stages (46%, stages III and IV). A more favorable treatment results was achieved by neutron therapy in all stages of tumor's advancement. In this case the rate of patients with local tumor control (87%) was significantly higher than after radiotherapy with slightly ionizing radiation (46%).

Heterogeneity of human factor VIII/vWF in lipaemic plasma.

In order to determine the influence of plasma lipids on the apparent molecular size of human F VIII/vWF and on the relationship of the factor-related properties, namely F VIII:C, F VIIIR:Rcof, and F VIIIR:Ag to F VIII/vWF, the factor's elution pattern in the presence of lipids on Sephacryl 1000 was investigated. When fresh plasma of fasting donors was chromatographed on this gel, F VIII/vWF eluted in a single sharp peak with all three F VIII-related activities appearing in the separation range of the gel column. When fresh postprandial lipaemic plasma was chromatographed on this gel, F VIII/vWF showed distinct heterogeneity in the elution pattern with respect to molecular size and relationship to the F VIII-related properties. After incubation of lipaemic plasma with phospholipase C the elution pattern of F VIII/vWF changed from heterogeneity to homogeneity similar to those of plasma of fasting donors. After incubation of lipaemic plasma with triglycerid lipase the elution pattern of F VIII/vWF remained heterogenous. A similar heterogeneity in the elution pattern of F VIII/vWF was found when plasma of fasting donors was mixed with a preparation of very low density lipoproteins derived from human postprandial plasma or with a preparation of coagulant-active phospholipids.

Ankle joint load and leg muscle activity during lifting.

The load on the talocrural joint during three different ways of lifting was compared and discussed with biomechanical and ergonomical aspects. Healthy subjects lifted a 12.8-kg box from floor to table-level with bent and straight knees. The loading moment of force about the bilateral ankle axis was calculated by means of a computerized static sagittal plane model. Electromyography was recorded from the tibial anterior, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles. The mean maximum loading moment was found to be 68 newton-meters with an estimated joint compressive force of 2.9 times body weight. The lowest loading moments obtained were associated with lifting the burden between bent knees and close to the pelvis.
