Cover design for radioactive and AMD-producing mine waste in the Ronneburg area, eastern Thuringia.

At the former uranium mining site of Ronneburg, large scale underground and open pit mining for nearly 40 years resulted in a production of about 113,000 tonnes of uranium and about 200 million cubic metres of mine waste. In their present state, these materials cause risks to human health and strong environmental impacts and therefore demand remedial action. The remediation options available are relocation of mine spoil into the open pit and on site remediation by landscaping/contouring, placement of a cover and revegetation. A suitable vegetated cover system combined with a surface water drainage system provides long-term stability against erosion and reduces acid generation thereby meeting the main remediation objectives which are long-term reduction of radiological exposure and contaminant emissions and recultivation. The design of the cover system includes the evaluation of geotechnical, radiological, hydrological, geochemical and ecological criteria and models. The optimized overall model for the cover system has to comply with general conditions as, e.g. economic efficiency, public acceptance and sustainability. Most critical elements for the long-term performance of the cover system designed for the Beerwalde dump are the barrier system and its long-term integrity and a largely self-sustainable vegetation.

[A new prosthetic smooth wall shaft].

A report about our productions and experiences with the smooth wall of the body's bed from Polyurethanschaum EZ 7607 system. The material mark out trough permanent improvement of it's wear and economical properties. Recently useful technique will be further developed trough continuous improvements of the materials in addition to our experiences.

Remission of the newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes by radiation of the pancreas.

The process of autoaggression of the IDDM causes an "insulitis" leading to the destruction of the beta-cells. By photons (9 MV) in a total dose of 10 Gy, divided into 5 single doses at an interval of 2 days in each case we could get a total remission in 3 out of 4 diabetics, a partly remission in the fourth patient. The therapeutic effect lasts till now (1-6 months) without any further treatment. The combination of a radiation of 5 x 1 Gy with 1 mg methylprednisolon/kg body weight at the beginning of the treatment leads to a partly remission in 5 out of 7 patients lasting 3-7 months hitherto. Beside the antiinflammatory effect of the radiation on the "insulitis" an effect on the activated lymphocytes can be supposed. Side effects were not observed. They need not to be expected in a local therapy in a relatively small field size with a low radiation dose. Further research is necessary to confirm the results.

[Presentation of an insulin-treated patient group within the scope of a 5-year study of the Diabetes Intervention Study (DIS)].

The diabetes intervention study (DIS) is an intervention and examination programme which in dietetically conducible diabetics who freshly became manifest shall decrease the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and analyse the influence of various steps of intervention on the course of diabetes. In the course of 5 years 54 out of 988 patients were insulinized by reason of deteriorations of metabolism. There were no significant differences between the intervention and control group concerning age, sex, index of ideal weight, fasting blood glucose, quantity of injected insulin and duration of the insulin treatment. By means of a C-peptide short-time test following glucagon stimulation an attempt of differentiation into type 1 and type 2 diabetics, was performed and compared with the results in literature.
