[Chronic bronchitis and ventilatory capacity of the lungs in relation to the function of small airways in workers in a Coke-Processing Plants in Zabrze].

In 449 male workers of the Zabrze Coking Plant (age 18-62 years) a questionnaire analysis of presence of bronchitic symptoms was carried out. The following ventilatory parameters were also assessed: FVC, FEV1, PEF, MEF75, MEF50, MEF25. Chronic bronchitis was diagnosed in 30.5% of the analysed subjects. The incidence of chronic bronchitis was four-fold higher in smoking males (33.9%) in comparison with non-smokers (8.3%). The authors did not find any relation between the character of work in subject with occupational exposure to atmospheric pollutants and incidence of chronic bronchitis. Smoking produced a decrease in flow during forced expiration especially in males older than 40 years. Subjects with higher occupational exposure to atmospheric pollutants demonstrated higher incidence of airway obstruction (21.2%) and lower mean FEV1% and flow volumes in comparison to subjects with lower occupational exposure.

[Cellular bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) components and pulmonary function in chronic extrinsic allergic alveolitis].

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and pulmonary function tests were carried out in 22 patients with chronic, extrinsic allergic alveolitis. In all a marked decrease of diffusion capacity was observed. The mean DLCO values was 34% predicted value. In 94% of the patients compliance was lowered. More pronounced abnormalities of pulmonary function (decrease of TLC and DLCO) were found with low BAL lymphocyte counts and increased macrophages count. The duration of the disease correlated with the absolute lymphocyte BAL count (r = -0.43). The BAL differential can be an additional measure of severity, duration of the disease process in chronic, extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

[Study of the effect of salbutamol inhalation on the function of small airways in patients with chronic bronchitis without ventilatory disorders using simple spirographic tests].

In 68 males with chronic bronchitis and normal standard spirometric parameters and in 30 healthy males the following were assessed: VC, FEV1, V50 and V75 before and after Salbutamol inhalations. In chronic bronchitis Salbutamol slightly decreased FEV1 values. Significant improvement of V50 and V75 was seen after Salbutamol inhalations in chronic bronchitis. This was observed more promeinently in comparison with the control group. Significant increase of V50 and V75 was seen in 14% of chronic bronchitics. The improvement in pattency of small airways following administration of bronchodilators can be an index for early identification of patients with chronic bronchitis, although this needs to be verified in prospective spirographic studies.
