During the treatment of IRDS with assisted ventilation pneumothorax is a common and dangerous complication where an early diagnosis is important for the successful treatment. In this case report the continuous monitoring of transthoracic electrical impedance has proven to be a sensitive and non-invasive method to detect the development of pneumothorax long before clinical signs are manifest.
A survey is given on the occurrence, the geographic origin and the arm composition of 27 Robertsonian fusion metacentric chromosomes of wild populations of the mouse. Their study is of twofold interest: a) it is possible to introduce these naturally occuring metacentrics in laboratory strains for experimental use. At present, altogether 34 metacentric chromosomes of different composition are available including 7 cases of metacentrics known form laboratory strains of the mouse. b) With the search for metacentrics in the mouse and with their identification insights are permitted in the role of Robertsonian changes in the course of mammalian evolution--Several separate populations of the mouse with different sets of multiple (up to 9) metacentrics have been found in Switzerland and Italy. Some of the individual metacentrics may occur in different populations. The participation of an acrocentric autosome in the formation of metacentrics seem to be at random, but the sex chromosomes are never included in a metacentric.--Homology of the arms involved in metacentrics is conserved, so that in meiosis of interpopulation hybrids is due to mechanisms of segregational imbalance and subsequent prenatal elimination of fetal offspring, but it follows also the pattern of male limited hybrid sterility.--From an evolutionary view point, karyotype rearrangements of Robertsonian type may initiate reproductive isolation, which prepares the ground for further genetic diversification and, as in the case of the mouse, of incipient speciation.
Comparative studies on the isothiocyanate content of rape-seeds and rape-seed oil show that, apart from nearly 300 mg/100 g of vinyl thio-oxazolidone, rape-seeds contain almost 200--300 mg/100 g of isothiocyanates of which 3-butenyl isothiocyanate and 4-pentenyl isothiocyanate (ratio of 4:1) are the main components as evidenced thin-layer and gaschromatographically. Only about 1 mg/100 g of isothiocyanates are found in pressed rape-seed oil; and but circa 10 mg/100 g, in extracted rape-seed oil. 3-Butenyl isothiocyanate and 4-pentenyl isothiocyanate (ratio of 4:1) are once more the main components. Thioglycerides are not detected in the oil. Vinyl thio-oxazolidone is found only in extracted rape-seed oil (about 2 mg/100 g).
1. Urine and stools were collected daily of 4 adult rats kept in single cages and injected once i.p. with alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH; dose per animal 126-150 mumoles), labelled uniformly with 14-C (10.8-14.0 X 10(6) dpm per animal). 2. In 4 weeks, 65% of the label was excreted through the kidneys and 16% by way of the intestine, with an estimated 8% being retained in depot fat. 3. GLC-analysis of the pooled urine showed it to contain very little unchanged drug, on average 0.05% of the dose. The time-course of the renal excretion of 14-C-labelled substance corresponded rather closely to the excretion of organically bound 36-Cl seen in earlier experiments with 36-Cl-labelled drug, indicating that the majority of urinary metabolites, presumably, still bear chlorine. 4. All or nearly all of the faecal 14-C was found by GLC to be accounted for by the stool's content of unchanged alpha-HCH. 5. Taken together, the results indicate a mean extent of alpha-HCH-degradation in the rat in the order of 80-85% of a dose. 6. Two rats were given 400 mg/kg of "cold" alpha-HCH by mouth 4 days before i.p. application of 14-C-labelled drug and were found to excrete more label through the kidneys in the first week than did the non-pretreated rats. This indicates that the drug stimulates its own degradation.
1. Free 2,4,5- and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) have been identified by co-crystallization with authentic carrier as constituents of the urine of rats given 3-H-labelled alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH). The two TCP's constituted 7% and 63%, respectively, of the free phenol fraction which was found to account for less than 5% of all urinary metabolites. 2. 75% of the label contained in the urine of rats collected for four weeks after an i.p. dose of 14-C-alpha-HCH could be extracted into an organic solvent after alkaline and acid hydrolysis. The radioactive material thus extracted was examined by TLC and GLC. It is shown to consist mainly of chlorophenols and chlorothiophenols. 3. The extracts' major constituent was 2,4,6-TCP. Its amount was determined by GLC and was found to account for, on average, 45% of the total urinary metabolites. In conjunction with other evidence, this is considered to establish 2,4,6-TCP as the major product of alpha-HCH-biodegradation in the rat. 4. Chromatographic evidence is presented for 2,3,4,5-tetrachlorophenol and 2,4,5-TCP being other components of the chlorophenol fraction isolated from hydrolysed urine. 5. The amount of label associated with the chlorothiophenol fraction suggests a pathway involving endogenous thiol to be of significance in alpha-HCH-biodegradation in rats. Pretreatment with the drug itself increased the proportion of label associated with the fraction.

Ten newborn babies with severe respiratory distress syndrome, all dependent on artificial ventilation, were treated via the airways with the isolated phospholipid fraction of bovine or porcine surfactant. After treatment with surfactant at a median age of 10.5 h, there was in all patients a striking improvement of lung aeration in chest films, with a decrease in parenchymal fluid retention and in distension of bronchioli. These radiologic findings were associated with a dramatic improvement of oxygenation and a significant reduction of the right-to-left shunt. In spite of the rapid therapeutic response, four patients died from cerebral hemorrhage. One of the surviving patients developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Our findings document efficacy of this new surfactant preparation in the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, but the long-term effects need to be further tested in randomized clinical trials.
