Primary cysts of the mastoid process.

Two patients with primary mastoid cysts are presented. These examples stress the importance of regular follow-up of patients with chronic serous otitis media so that the complications or associated abnormalities may be treated early prior to extensive destructive erosion. The formation of these cysts may be due to changes brought about by chronic serous otitis media, or they may be of congenital origin with middle ear effusion as a sequela.

Spontaneous return of facial motion following seventh cranial nerve resection.

Four patients who had undergone operative procedures, wherein substantial segments of the VIIth cranial nerve had been resected, experienced some degree of reanimation of the muscles of expression despite the fact that no restitutive measures were employed. The site of insult was in the face in two; the temporal bone in one; and the fourth occurred in the cerebellopontine angle. Teeth-clenching and grimacing were practiced before a mirror by each subject, and one wonders if "re-education" of dormant trigeminal nerve fibers might have facilitated the rehabilitation which was achieved.

An anatomic study of the hypotympanic branch of Jacobson's nerve.

Microscopic dissection of 20 human temporal bones revealed that the nerve of Jacobson gave rise to a hypotympanic branch in 50% of the specimens. The fact that the branch was frequently covered by promontory bone and was difficult to approach by the standard tympanotomy technique may explain the 21% failure rate as reported in the literature.
