Incidence of oral and oropharyngeal cancer in United Kingdom (1990-1999) -- recent trends and regional variation.

This study aimed to determine whether the incidence of oral cancer is continuing to rise in the UK and if this varies geographically. A descriptive epidemiological study of oral cancer incidence in 12 UK cancer registries (1990-1999) was undertaken. Poisson regression models were employed to assess trends. There were 32,852 oral cancer cases registered (1990-1999). Statistically significant increases in incidence of 18% and 30% were seen in males and females respectively (p<0.01). The trend was observed in younger (<45 years) and older (45+ years) age groups (p<0.01) with 3.5% and 2.4% average annual increases respectively. These increases were consistent for the majority of regions in the older group. For the younger group the increases in incidence were more rapid and differed geographically. Incidence remains higher in men than women, in older compared with younger groups, and in northern regions. These findings provide evidence of a continuing increase in the burden of oral cancer across the UK.

Physiological correlates of imagery-induced orgasm in women.

Orgasm has been reported to occur in response to imagery in the absence of any physical stimulation. This study was undertaken to ascertain whether the subjective report of imagery-induced orgasm is accompanied by physiological and perceptual events that are characteristic of genitally stimulated orgasm. Subjects were women who claimed that they could experience orgasm from imagery alone. Orgasm from self-induced imagery or genital self-stimulation generated significant increases in systolic blood pressure, heart rate, pupil diameter, pain detection threshold, and pain tolerance threshold over resting control conditions. These findings provide evidence that orgasm from self-induced imagery and genital self-stimulation can each produce significant and substantial net sympathetic activation and concomitant significant increases in pain thresholds. The increases in the self-induced imagery orgasm condition were comparable in magnitude to those in the genital self-stimulation-produced orgasm condition. On this basis we state that physical genital stimulation is evidently not necessary to produce a state that is reported to be an orgasm and that a reassessment of the nature of orgasm is warranted.

The stability of the o-phthalaldehyde/2-mercaptoethanol derivatives of amino acids: an investigation using high-pressure liquid chromatography with a precolumn derivatization technique.

The investigation of the stabilities of o-phthalaldehyde/2-mercaptoethanol derivatives of amino acids using a precolumn reaction technique and a high-pressure liquid chromatographic procedure is reported. The amino acid derivatives are shown to be stable on the high-pressure liquid chromatography column. Optimal conditions for the development of these derivatives for their separation using this technique are recommended.

Analysis in the ion exchange tradition.

Amino acid analysis by ion exchange chromatography is just as important an analytical tool in 1986 as it was in the late 1950s, when Moore and Stein first described an automated AAA instrument.
