[The oblique projection in the radiologic study of the breast].

In order to verify the diagnostic value of the oblique view (O) in Mammography, we analyzed the results obtained in 3,833 patients examined with Mammography or Xerography. 2,076 patients were examined with conventional methodology (including cranio-caudal--CC--view and medio-lateral--ML--view at the first exam and at the follow-up exams). 1,307 patients were examined with methodology including also O view (CC and O at the first exam and the O only at the exams of follow-up). We compared the diagnostic possibilities of the two groups of patients about detection of focal lesions confirmed by histologic results; and their "cost" in terms of exposure-dose to the patients. We observed a better diagnostic capacity (+3.5%) for the methodology including the oblique view; moreover we observed in this methodology an important reduction (-20%) of the exposure-dose to the patients.

[Considerations on the protection of non-ionizing radiation workers].

After a brief examination of the physical properties and biological effects on man of e.m. and u.s. type N.I.R., their most common fields of use in industry and medicine are described. The report goes on to examine the risks and possible damage that may be incurred by those who work with these radiations on the basis of their intensity and the type and distance of the source as well as their duration with particular reference to the so-called "target" organs. The hope is then expressed that regulations will be produced for the protection of these workers. Particularly as far as preventive medicine is concerned such regulations should be on the same lines as those formulated for workers with ionising radiations by Presidential Decree 185/64 in line with E.E.C. and I.C.R.P. recommendations.

[Assessment of the diagnostic quality of radiography, xerography and computerized bone mineralometry in cases of osteoporosis].

The results of a study conducted on 40 osteoporotic subjects of both sexes aged 40-80 are reported with a comparison of the diagnosis of the nature and degree of the osteoporosis obtained by traditional radiography and xerography and, on the same subjects, by computerised bone mineralometry. The latter technique provided accurate and fairly early diagnosis in all subjects considered and it is therefore indicated as an elective method for the diagnosis of suspected osteoporosis. Xerography proved the most reliable of the traditional techniques. It should also be noted that in terms of protection against radiation, BMC is distinctly preferable to other radiological examination techniques since total radiation dose is very small.

[Changes in the lumbosacral spine caused by sports microtraumas].

The results are reported of a clinical and radiological study of a group of athletes that investigated the often asymptomatic alterations found in the spinal area. In comparison with non-athletic controls the sportsmen revealed a significantly higher incidence in the pars intearticularis of the posterior apophysis in the lumbar region. Practitioners of sports requiring violent spasmodic effort also revealed spondylolysis and spondyloisthesis. The early appearance of lumbar degenerative arthritis in practitioners of sports requiring moderate but sustained effort was also statistically significant.

[Monostotic osteolytic metastases].

The results are reported of high energy Co60 radiotherapy treatment over a period of twenty years, of 120 patients suffering from metastatic monostotic osteolytic original tumours of the breast, prostate and bronchial tubes. A fair improvement was noted, subjectively in terms of relief of pain, and objectively in terms of recalcification of the osteolytic area in a significantly high percentage of the patients treated.

[Gastric adenomatosis. Case reports and attempted new pathogenetic interpretation].

Two cases of gastric adenoma with lymphocyte infiltration of the basal stroma are reported. Diagnosis was based on gastroscopic, radiographic and histological data. The more significant findings are illustrated. The various theories relating to the aetiopathogenesis of this form are discussed and the possibility of its being an autoimmunitary phenomenon is examined.
