Treatment for strabismus in cerebral palsy.

The efficacy of extraocular muscle surgery and visual training for strabismus, in a limited number of cerebral palsy patients, are examined. Longitudinal data on tropias are presented for surgically treated patients. Short-term effects of visual training for another group of patients are described. Longitudinal data on tropias are presented for a group of cerebral palsy patients who received no strabismus therapy.

Longitudinal study of vision in cerebral palsy.

Sixty-five percent of a predominantly young cerebral palsy population of 34 showed refractive error changes greater than 0.75 D over an average period of 11 years. Tropias were relatively stable. Differences between medical diagnostic categories were found. The current study is related to an earlier study by the same author.

Water-provocative tests of selected patients.

Thirteen patients with suspected glaucoma were subjected to the water-provocative test for glaucoma. Intraocular pressures were measured over a 1-hr period, and characteristic rises were compared with those of four glaucomatous eyes (in two patients). Glaucoma was subsequently ruled out for the 13 patients. Criteria are suggested for confirming the presence of glaucoma.

A study of vision in cerebral palsy.

One hundred twenty-eight patients (most less than 13 years old) with various types of cerebral palsy were examined to assess visual acuity, refractive state, oculomotor functions, sensory fusion, and ocular health. Special procedures for examining these patients are described. Vision or ocular defects were found to be present in 86% of these cerebral palsy patients. Significant refractive errors and strabismus were the most common defects, being present in 50% or more of the patients. Ocular disease was relatively uncommon.
