The use of ultrasonography is one of the most appropriate and less invasive techniques for the identification of prenatal assessment of urinary tract anomalies. This technique is able to distinguish malformations which are not compatible with life from those which could benefit from appropriate prenatal management treatment in view of a successful outcome after birth. During the past three years, 13 cases of urinary tract anomalies were found and treated. On the basis of our experience, we believe that ultrasonography is especially indicated: to make an early diagnosis of the type of malformation; in the presence of a complex malformation, gives the physician the possibility of showing and explaining to the parents all the aspects involved in reconstructive surgery thus giving them the possibility to decide for abortion or not; to reveal latent malformations: in these cases postnatal treatment may be efficiently programmed. to prepare the mother for early cesarean section, thus avoiding the trauma of vaginal delivery in cases of high risk such as fetuses with hydronephrotic kidneys. Thus, together with more experience in the field of intrauterine microsurgery, the outlook on the future of fetuses with malformations is certainly becoming brighter.
Samples from eight cases of human adrenal pheochromocytoma were obtained using open needle biopsy and processed for electron microscopy. The good tissue preservation and the absence of mechanical damage allowed the confirmation of already described features of this differentiated tumor or of new findings. The presence of catecholamine granules in the pericapillar spaces and in the lumen of fenestrated capillaries was documented together with that of amyelinated nerve fibers surrounded by Schwann cells or in close contact with chromaffin cells.
The occurrence of osteoplastic activity in adult osteocytes from the femoral cortex of laying hens previously kept on a hypocalcaemic diet was studied after return of the animals to a calcium-rich alimentation. The following techniques were used: 1) tetracycline labelling of new calcifying matrix; 2) osteoid staining with alcian blue at pH 1.9 or toluidine blue at pH 3.1; 3) electron microscopic observations; 4) autoradiographic evaluation of (3H) proline uptake by osteocytes. Quantitative evaluation of (3H) proline uptake by osteocytes. Quantitative evaluation of the preparations consistently showed indication of osteoplastic activity in at least 20% of the osteocytes with relatively higher values in the metaphysis than in the diaphysis.
Pigeons were trained on a matching-to-sample task in which sample hue and required sample-specific observing behavior provided redundant, relevant cues for correct choices. On trials that involved red and yellow hues as comparison stimuli, a fixed-ratio 16 schedule (FR 16) was required to illuminate the comparisons when the sample was red, and a differential-reinforcement-of-low-rates 3-sec schedule (DRL 3-sec) was required when the sample was yellow. On trials involving blue and green hues as comparison stimuli, an FR 16 schedule was required when the sample was blue and a DRL 3-sec schedule was required when the sample was green. For some pigeons, a 0-sec delay intervened between sample offset and comparison onset, whereas other pigeons experienced a random mixture of 0-sec and 2-sec delay trials. Test trial performance at 0-sec delay indicated that sample-specific behavior controlled choice performance considerably more than sample hue did. Test performance was independent of whether original training involved all 0-sec delay trials or a mixture of 0-sec and 2-sec delays. Sample-specific observing response requirements appear to facilitate pigeons' matching-to-sample performance by strengthening associations between the observing response and correct choice.
A procedure for the isolation of osteoclasts from the heterogeneus population of medullary bone and marrow cells is presented. Cell suspensions were prepared from medullary bone of laying hens by mechanical dispersion. Following an osmotic shock and two 90 min unit gravity sedimentations, fractions highly enriched in osteoclasts were collected and subsequently cultivated in MEM with FCS. Ara C was added to the cultures for 48h to remove all the cells entering the mitotic cycle. The advantages and the possible applications of the method are discussed.
The extent of osteocytic osteoplasia has been studied in laying hens fed for seven days a hypocalcaemic diet and returned to the commercial laying ratio. The microscopic examination of the femur shows the presence of newly formed bone matrix on the wall of osteocytic lacunae, much more numerous in the experimental animals than in the controls. The physiological significance of the finding is briefly discussed.
