Effect of glimepiride on the electrical activity of isolated rabbit heart muscle.

The effect of glimepiride (CAS 93479-97-1) on the electrical threshold, conduction time, effective refractory period and automaticity of left atrium and right ventricle in the isolated rabbit heart was investigated and compared with those of chlorpropamide and glibenclamide. From the sulphonylureas investigated only glibenclamide diminished the electrical activity of rabbit heart muscle preparations. Chlorpropamide and glimepiride have a mild effect to change the basic parameters on the opposite direction. It seems that glimepiride does not have a significant effect on cardiac muscle in vitro.

Successful treatment of erectile disfunction with Fortisex coated tablets.

After a brief survey of treatment, possibilities of erectile dysfunction, the Authors describe their results with FORTISEX coated tablets playing an important role in the conservative therapy even in our days. Their results suggest that the primary advantage of the product appears in increasing the libido in sexual problems of psychic origin, but its secondary field of application is the minor improvement of erectile parameters of disfunctions of "mixed" history.

Concomitant incidence of fertility chance reducing varicocele and chromosome aberration.

Authors describe the case of a male patient with varicocele, oligozoospermatism and subfertility, a 46 XY t (8; 10) (q22; p15) balanced chromosome carrier. Following varicectomy, successful pregnancy has developed even with balanced translocation meaning only 50% fertility chance. Prenatal diagnostics by chorion biopsy showed a fetus of normal chromosome constellation. Authors call attention to the fact that even minor, step-by-step improvements in fertility chance may lead to success in multiple aberrations.

Vacuum therapy in the treatment of erectal impotence.

The authors were the first in Hungary to use vacuum-induced erection in the treatment of erectal dysfunction. Negative pressure was induced by OSBON ERECAID SYSTEM. Erectal impotence was successfully treated with this non-invasive and complications-free method in patients with diabetes and psychic problems. The method was applied first for ameliorating sexual complaints due to virile climacteric and--based on the results--its application is recommended.

[Conservative treatment of supracondylar humerus fractures in children with Blount's method (author's transl)].

Author treated during the period of 1971--78, 84 patients with supracondylar humerus fractures using the method of Blount for fixation. Based on experiences gained by follow up examination 2--5 years after the first treatment, author states, that this method yielding good functional results, by its simplicity and efficiency is an excellent and feasible procedure for selected supracondylar humeral fracture cases.

[Importance of arginine content and arginase activity in fertility].

Experimental studies have shown that in men with pathospermia the arginine content of sperm plasma is lower than in normal men. In order to find out the reason of this divergency the authors analysed the content of arginine, urea, citrulline, GAA and arginase activity in serum and in sperm plasma of 40 patients with normo-, oligo- or azoospermia. For the first time our results show that the low arginine content in pathological sperm is not due to disorder of the precursor metabolism, but to the increased arginase activity and to the increased conversion of arginine to GAA. In order to find out the mechanism of action and to develop an adequate andrological therapy detailed studies on molecular level have to be done.

[Condyloma acuminata].

A review of the clinical features and therapeutic possibilities of condyloma acuminatum is presented on the ground of the ten-year experience of the authors. A giant condyloma simplex with benign clinical behaviour and typical histologic pattern and a case of epithelioma starting from a condyloma simplex and leading to the amputation of the penis are described.

Therapeutic use of ultrasound in urology.

After a brief historical review, experience with ultrasonic treatment is described. Since therapy performed by means of the moving head technique had beneficial effect on chronic prostatitis, plastic induration of the penis and the accompanying sexual potency disturbance, the method is recommended for use.

Circulating B and T lymphocytes in chronic active liver disease.

The number of circulating total lymphocytes and the number of B and T lymphocytes from the blood were estimated in 22 patients with biopsy-verified chronic active liver disease. The total number of lymphocytes and the number of rosette-forming cells (T lymphocytes) were decreased in patients with liver disease. The number of IgG,- IgA- and IgM-bearing lymhocytes (B cells) did not change significantly while the number of null cells increased in patients vs. a control group.

[Complex therapy of plastic induration of the penis].

The data of 56 patients with plastic induration of the penis treated at the Department of Urology of Semmelweis University Medical School are presented. After a survey of the literature and of the therapeutic possibilities the surgical solution worked out by the authors recommended. Conservative treatment alone cannot secure a cure and its pre-operative application will not improve the chances of a cure. A palpable knot is the indication for surgery. Postoperative cease on ultrasonic treatment. If for some reason (concomitant illness, oppositions of the patient to operation) only conservative treatment can be applied, ultrasonic therapy is believed the most suitable.

[Serum immunoglobulin and glycoprotein concentration and mesenchymal reaction in chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis].

In the liver needle biopsy specimens of 45 patients with hepatitis chronica persistents, hepatitis chronica aggressiva and cirrhosis of the liver the number of lymphoid cells and fibroblasts, and in the serum of the same patients concentration of IgG, IgA, IgM, alfa-2-macroglobulin and coeuroplasmin was examined. It was established that 1. the number of lymphoid cells and fibroblasts in the liver tissue of patients with hepatitis chronica aggressiva and cirrhosis of the liver increases significantly, 2. there exists a correlation between the number of lymphoid cells and the concentration of IgG, 3. the serum level of the alfa-2-macroglobulin increases parallely with the number of fibroblasts of the liver in hepatitis chronica aggressive and in cirrhosis of the liver.

Effect of immunosuppressive therapy on the serum glycoprotein levels in chronic aggressive hepatitis.

The sera of 24 patients with chronic aggressive hepatitis receiving combined immunosuppressive therapy were studied for the concentrations of the carbohydrate components of glycoproteins and the IgG, IgA, IgM, alpha-2-macroglobulin, coeruloplasmin, beta-1-C-globulin and transferrin levels over a period of 2 years. Liver biopsy was performed repeatedly in 50% of the cases. On the evidence of the results, combined immunosuppressive treatment is regarded as apt to normalize the serum concentrations of IgG, IgA, IgM and to reduce those of alpha-2-macroglobulin and coeruloplasmin. Among the carbohydrate components of glycoproteins only the amount of hexose was reduced.

Serum lipids and lipoproteins in chronic liver disease.

Serum cholesterol, triglyceride, total lipids and the lipoprotein pattern were studied in 169 cases chronic liver disease confirmed by biopsy. On the ground of the immunological and morphological results the patients were classified into five groups. In chronic persistent hepatitis no significant abnormality was found. In chronic aggressive hepatitis and in cirrhosis of the liver the serum cholesterol level was significantly reduced. In fatty infiltration of the liver the serum cholesterol, triglyceride and total lipid concentrations were significantly increased, as compared with the normal values and with the figures obtained in the cases of chronic inflammatory liver disease. In the cases of cirrhosis with additional diabetes the lipid values were likewise increased. In chronic aggressive hepatitis and in cirrhosis of the liver the levels of pre-beta and alpha lipoprotein were decreased, in fatty infiltration of the liver those of beta and pre-beta lipoprotein were increased.

Mesenchymal reaction and serum glycoprotein concentration in chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis.

In liver biopsy specimens of 45 patients with chronic persistent hepatitis, chronic aggressive hepatitis and liver cirrhosis the number of lymphoid cells and fibroblasts as well as in the sera of the same patients the concentration of IgG, IgA, IgM, alpha-2-macroglobulin and coeruloplasmin have been studied. The number of lymphoid cells and fibroblasts, was significantly elevated in chronic aggressive hepatitis and liver cirrhosis; a close correlation could be demonstrated between the number of the lymphoid cells and the IgG concentration; the serum alpha-2-macroglobulin level changed parallel to the number of liver fibroblasts in chronic aggressive hepatitis and liver cirrhosis.
