Thermal inactivation of different measles virus strains.

The kinetics of thermal inactivation at 45 degrees C was investigated with different measles virus strains. The decrease of virus infectivity was determined by plaque counting test. The inactivation velocity of strains Schwarz, Moraten, Woodfalk, L16/SSW, L16/Moscow, and L16/S3 based on regression curve analysis (virus titres by time) allowed to divide them into 3 categories according to temperature sensitivity. Our results showed that development of a thermostable measles vaccine does not require selection of a thermoresistant virus variant if certain conditions for virus harvest are fulfilled.

Substrate specificity of the neuraminidase of different mumps virus strains.

The hydrolysis of neuraminlactose, fetuin, ovomucoid, kappa-caseinglycopeptide and mucine from the bovine submaxillary gland with the neuraminidase (NA) of mumps virus strains Jeryl Lynn, Enders and Berlin 9/76 was investigated to determine the pH-dependence of the reaction with the different substrates. The corresponding curves showed splitting into several peaks with reaction maxima ranging from pH 4.7 to pH 6.7. This occurred probably due to the heterogeneity of the virus samples. The NA of each virus strain had the best reaction affinity to neuraminlactose followed by decreasing affinities to ovomucoid, fetuin and kappa-caseinglycopeptide. The mucine from bovine submaxillary gland was not digested at all. The highest hydrolysis of each substrate was found with the Jeryl Lynn strain, which also possessed the lowest substrate specificity. It was followed by that of strain Enders and finally by isolate Berlin 9/76 which, in turn, had the highest substrate specificity. The lower substrate specificity of mumps virus NA seemed to correlate with a lower degree of its cytopathogenicity for hamster ependyma cells.

Neuraminidase activity and antigenicity of the egg adapted strains of mumps virus.

Two freshly isolated mumps virus strains were adapted to embryonated eggs. The activity of their neuraminidase (NA) and their antigenicity were examined in the 5th, 10th and 15th passages. The NA was characterized by estimation of the Michaelis constant, while the antigenicity of virus strains was assessed by induction of antibodies as detected in complement fixation (CF) tests. The KM value for strain Berlin 9/76 NA in its 15th passage was 5.65 mmol/l and exceeded 4.2 times that of strain Berlin 1/76 (KM = 1.31 mmol/l). The KM values of both strains increased in the course of passaging by 55 or 260%, respectively. The antigenicity of both egg passaged strains remained unchanged. Under the same conditions, the Jeryl Lynn vaccine strain revealed a seroconversion rate of 44%; the KM value of the NA from this strain was closely similar to that of Berlin 1/76 virus in the 15th passage (= 1.34 mmol/l).

[An epidemiological study of cancer of the ovary (author's transl)].

A study of 149 patients with ovarian cancer compared to 149 age-matched women out of the population is analyzed. There were no statistically significant differences in nearly all extragenital and all gynaecological diseases. No differences were found in menstrual history, history of hormonotherapy, age of menarche and menopause, number od nulliparous women, number of deliveries and abortions, radiation exposure, double primaries, blood groups, family history and consumption of nicotine. The findings in this study showed a difference in two variables: There were more women with hypertension and more never married women among the patients with ovarian cancer. It is not possible to define a group of high risk with these findings. It is suggested that endocrine factors influence the onset of ovarian cancer. Therefore these factors more should be taken into consideration in further epidemiological studies.

[Epidemiological aspects of corpus carcinoma].

In a case-control-study an epidemiological investigation of cancer of the endometrium was carried out. 407 patients with cancer of the endometrium were compared with a control group of 450 women. The patients with endometrial cancer differed from the control group in the following manner: Significantly higher incidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Overweight could not be printed out reliably, but there are so many corresponding statements in literature about a higher degree of overweight that there could be no doubt about it. Furthermore the patients with carcinoma of the uterine corpus had an earlier menarche, a later menopause, a smaller number of deliveries and more menstrual abnormalities. They were more exposed to radiation in the pelvis, the incidence of malignant tumors was higher in their families. So factors of high risk related to cancer of the endometrium could be defined.

[Comparative study of the sensitivity of the serological methods used in detecting mumps virus antibodies].

Six different methods were used for examinations for the presence of antibodies to mumps virus in 43 sera of donors varying in ages from 18 to 58 years. Judging by the percentage of positive results, most sensitive tests included: radial hemolysis (95.3), neutralization (88.4-81.4), immunofluorescence (83.7). Comparison of the results obtained in these tests revealed high correlation coefficients of antibody titres. The lowest number of positive results was obtained in lectin-neuraminidase test and hemagglutination-inhibition test (51.2% and 32.6%, respectively).
