Control and accountability of controlled substance administration in the operating room.

Personnel working in the operating room complex may be at increased risk for chemical impairment. It has been proposed that this predisposition may be related to the frequency of use of controlled substances and the inadequate control over distribution of these medications, which frequently exists in the operating room. A system utilizing a pharmacy satellite in the operating room has increased the control and accountability of drug administration practices. Several other alternative systems are also reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the establishment of a quality assurance program to monitor compliance routinely.

[Bronchial abnormalities in a clinic for respiratory diseases (author's transl)].

The frequency in bronchial abnormalities is generally underestimated. In patients of a clinic for respiratory diseases however 3% were found in those having had a bronchoscopy, a figure which has up to now not been mentioned in the literature. After discussing originating theories and classifying possibilities the observations are tabulated, and some of them introduced as representative examples. In the discussion it is pointed out, that the abnormalities apparently represent a locus minoris resistentiae, since pathological changes are often found in these areas.

[Treatment of chronic bronchitis with Supristol and a cotrimoxazole preparation--comparative bacteriological and clinical findings, results of a double-blind study (author's transl)].

In a randomized double-blind study on the treatment of chronic bronchitis, Supristol (co-trifamole) was compared with co-trimoxazole. 163 patients participated in the clinical trial that was performed at three different hospitals in accordance with a uniform trial plan. The microbiological investigations were done centrally at a hygiene institute for all three hospitals. The bacteriological results from the 61 patients whose antibiogram revealed sensitive pathogens before starting the therapy demonstrate the equal effectivenesss of the two preparations. With Supristol there was an elimination rate of 95.3%, and with co-trimoxazole of 93.2%. The clinical parameters do not show any difference in effectiveness either.

[Airways obstruction and disodium-cromoglycate--a new therapeutic principle (Clinical aspects) (author's transl)].

A short outline of the causes, pathology and genetic background of airways obstruction is presented in which the special importance of allergic and immune reactions is emphasised. The place of disodium-cromoglycate (DSCG) in treatment is shown to lie in interrupting the chain of events which leads to an asthmatic attack. The main field of application of this drug is in allergic asthma, but it also has a place in the treatment of other forms of labile airways obstruction where an allergic cause in not so obvious. Examples of this are given and the protective effect of DSCG on the irritable bronchial tree is also demonstrated. Dosage and technique of administration are described and it is shown that conventional drug therapy can be reduced when this drug is properly used.
