Clavulanic acid and amoxycillin: a clinical, bacteriological, and pharmacological study.

Clavulanic acid is an inhibitor of certain beta-lactamases, notably those enzymes which inactivate the penicillins and cause resistance of important bacteria to these antibiotics. Microbiological, pharmacological, and clinical studies show that clavulanic acid in combination with amoxycillin is effective and safe in the treatment of urinary-tract infection caused by amoxycillin-resistant bacteria.

Studies with cefuroxime: a new beta-lactamase resistant cephalosporin.

28 patients suffering from a variety of bacterial infections have been treated with cefuroxime. 18 were cured and 6 improved during treatment. Side effects were minimal and intramuscular injection was well tolerated. Serum and urine levels well in excess of the MICs of sensitive organisms were obtained using dosages of 750 mg 8 hourly. Biliary excretion was impaired in the presence of obstruction, but adequate bile levels of cefuroxime were observed following relief of the obstruction. Cefuroxime was widely active against gram-negative bacilli and against Streptococcus faecalis, but less active against Bacteroides spp.

Cefoxitin: a hospital study.

Cefoxitin is a new cephamycin antibiotic that has recently become available for clinical trial. We report here the results of an uncontrolled trial of cefoxitin treatment in 31 hospital patients with various acute infections, 20 of whom were cured. Serum, urine, and bile concentrations of cefoxitin greatly exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) required for clinically important Gram-negative organisms. We conclude that cefoxitin will have a place in the management of serious infections, particularly in the abdominal cavity and renal tracts.
