Albino rabbits with experimental brain oedema produced by a combined left hemisphere cryogenic injury and a metabolic insult by a 6-aminonicotinamide (6-ANA) were administered intravenous dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) in varying concentrations and doses in the following manner: Subgroup A (concentration response) received 1.0 g/kg bolus of a 10, 20, 30, or 40% solution. Subgroup B (dose response) received as a 20% solution a 1.0 g/kg bolus, 1.5 g/kg bolus, or 2.0 g/kg infusion. One hour following administration of the agent, the animals were killed, their brains rapidly removed by craniectomy and brain water, sodium and potassium measured. Significant decreases in brain sodium and water content in the right hemisphere were noted in both subgroups A (p less than 0.05) and B (p less than 0.005) and in the left hemisphere in subgroup B only (p less than 0.005). There is an apparent effect on brain oedema by a DMSO mediated sodium dependent water mobilization.
Effective communication seems to necessitate a very conscious (supra-) professional attitude at the hand of the liaison person, so that she or he continuously keeps in mind the possibilities and limitations in terms of communicability-no matter rank or level of consumers. From the point of view of communicability in general, one will need: (a) a body of knowledge and techniques relevant to the needs and purposes of the consumers; (b) a varied set of understandable languages in terms of frames of reference and definitions of concepts, adjusted to the various levels of complexity needed, (c) liaison person attitudes coherent to the chosen frames of reference, (d) a realistic view of the possibilities in different liaison set-ups, and (e) a conscious didactic strategy based on considerations of the aims of one's function. Among the above listed factors we shall especially focus on our 'erroneous zones' and failures in our endeavors to forward psychosomatic ideas and attitudes, and some implications of patient care and nursing concretely in connection with some cases submitted to minor surgical treatment, demonstrating the importance of practical psychosomatic impact at the level of patient nursing and care.

We report a 7-year-old boy with progressive, early onset somatic and cranial muscle weakness associated with external ophthalmoplegia, facial weakness, type I fibre hypotrophy and myofibril degeneration. We separate this condition from congenital fibre type disproportion because of the facial weakness, ophthalmoplegia, central nucleation, and lysis in type I fibres. The case, which is similar to that described by Bender and Bender (1977), nosologically should be classified between the centronuclear myopathies and congenital fibre type disproportion, and most likely represents a congenital or neonatal disturbance of trophic interaction between nerve and muscle.

Calmodulin (CaM) has been previously shown to be essential for cell cycle progression in eukaryotic cells, being required at the G1/S, G2/M, and metaphase-anaphase transitions. Little is known about the the specific CaM-dependent enzymes that mediate Ca2+/CaM signaling to affect cell proliferation. In this study we show that inhibition of calmodulin kinase II (CaMKII) in HeLa cells using the CaMKII inhibitor KN-93 causes cell cycle arrest, demonstrating that CaMKII is required for cell cycle progression. Detailed analysis of arrest cells suggests that CaMKII is required for the initiation of DNA synthesis. Cells treated with KN-93 arrest with a G1 DNA content, but with elevated cyclin-dependent histone H1 kinase activity, suggesting that CaMKII may act at a point very close to the onset of DNA synthesis in mammalian cells.
Specimens from the epithelium on the lateral wall of the human nose were examined under the electron microscope using a lipid and carbohydrate retaining method. In many of the ciliated epithelial cells and in some of the cells in the mucosal glands we identified multilamellated granules. These structures resembled lamellar bodies as found in normal alveoles where they are known to represent surfactant. The effect of phospholipid and the upper respiratory system is unknown but the similarities of these granules suggest to us a surface active function as it seems to play a role for normal Eustachian tube function.
