[Ulcerative rectocolitis diagnosed in the elderly. Case studies].

Fourteen patients with idiopathic ulcerative colitis (UC) diagnosis made over 60 years of age have been extrapolated from 255 (5.49%) consecutive. Some clinical parameters (sex; symptoms of onset; delay in diagnosis; extension of disease; density of relapses; therapy with cortisone) have been compared between the 14 patients with ultra sixtieth year of age diagnosis (A group) and the 241 patients with a diagnosis made previously (B group). There were no significant differences concerning the symptoms at onset and the delay in diagnosis. In group A a larger prevalence of the male (M/F 3.66 against 1.46) and distal localization (64% against 53%) have been reported. The density of relapse and therapy with cortisone (p < 0.025) prevailed in B group. In conclusion, limited to our experience, the UC in A group is less severe than in B group.

[Characteristics of surgically removed polyps in the course of follow-up after endoscopic polypectomy from the colon].

Our experience refers to 188 patients submitted to endoscopic polypectomy, of whom 61 (32.4%) also to subsequent endoscopic controls. The polyps removed during follow-up compared to those previously removed showed the following characteristic: 1) Higher frequency in right colon (p > 0.01); 2) smaller size (p > 0.1); 3) lower frequency of adenomas, not statistically significant; 4) high frequency of relapse in juvenile polyps.

[Clinical-therapeutic considerations in the treatment of aspecific abdominal disturbances in patients with ulcerative colitis in remission: preliminary note on therapy with rifaximin].

In this study the efficacy of a topic intestinal antibiotic, Rifaximine, on quiescent ulcerative colitis has been evaluated. Twelve patients, aged 20-45 years, affected by ulcerative colitis, with an endoscopic evidence of remission and abdominal symptoms referable to microflora alteration have been admitted. All patients have been treated with Rifaximine 800 mg p.o. three times a day for 10 consecutive days. Meteorism, abdominal pain, and the stool number have been evaluated at admission and on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th days of therapy. All symptoms and clinical parameters showed a mean significant early reduction on Rifaximine treatment. Only one patient failed to show a substantial improvement. In no case side effects appeared.

[Cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus antibodies in patients with idiopathic ulcerative rectocolitis].

The total and fractioned titres of circulating anticytomegalovirus (CMV) and antiherpesvirus (HSV) antibodies were evaluated in 63 idiopathic ulcerative proctocolitis patients in follow-up. The population was disaggregated applying criteria related to the stage of the disease: duration, extension, number of observed relapses over the follow-up. It was noted that just the anti-HSV antibodies were correlated in a statistically significant way to the extension (p less than 0.025) and duration (p less than 0.025) of the disease. We believe that this behaviour is a manifestation of the disease and that the antiHSV titration may be included in a score of evaluation during the follow-up.

Short- and long-term treatment with rosaprostol of patients with gastritis.

Therapy with rosaprostol was applied in 25 patients with gastritis, namely 11 cases for about 30 days and 14 for 60 days, without further gastro-protective treatments. The drug induced an early complete disappearance of subjective and objective symptoms, already at the end of the first ten days of treatment, whereas the endoscopic and the histological findings revealed a highly significant improvement at the end of the treatment, with normalization in nearly all the cases. The drug was well tolerated, and did not induce diarrhoea nor change haemodynamic parameters. These highly significant results emphasize the efficacy and safety of the drug.

[Influence of cholestasis on enzymatic induction with phenobarbital and other enzymatic aspects: experimental studies on guinea pigs].

Investigations in guinea pigs to evaluate interferences between cholestasis and enzymatic induction by phenobarbital, and influences that both experimental conditions exert on the levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase in microsomes and other subcellular fractions, have shown that: 1) cholestasis inhibits inductions of cytochrome P-450 from phenobarbital; 2) gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase is not an inducible enzyme in guinea pig; 3) rises or ferum gamma-glutanyl transpeptidase produced either by cholestasis or phenobarbital administration, are not related to an increased enzymatic synthesis in the various subcellular fractions of liver cell.
