Inelastic x-ray scattering study of the collective dynamics in liquid sodium.

Inelastic x-ray scattering data have been collected for liquid sodium at T=390 K, i.e., slightly above the melting point. Owing to the very high instrumental resolution, pushed up to 1.5 meV, it has been possible to determine accurately the dynamic structure factor S(Q,omega) in a wide wave-vector range, 1.5-15 nm(-1), and to investigate on the dynamical processes underlying the collective dynamics. A detailed analysis of the line shape of S(Q,omega), similarly to other liquid metals, reveals the coexistence of two different relaxation processes with slow and fast characteristic time scales. The present data lead to the conclusion that (i) the picture of the relaxation mechanism based on a simple viscoelastic model fails and (ii) although the comparison with other liquid metals reveals similar behavior, the data do not exhibit an exact scaling law as the principle of the corresponding state would predict.

Quantum effects in the dynamics of He probed by inelastic x-ray scattering.

Quantum effects in the teraherz dynamics of supercritical 4He have been studied as a function of both density rho and temperature T; they have been characterized through their effects on the second and third spectral moments of the dynamic structure factor S(Q, omega), measured by the inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) technique. The IXS spectra were collected in the low-Q region below and around the position of the first diffraction peak Q(m), i.e., in a range relatively unusual in this kind of investigation. The measured spectral moments clearly show a departure from their high-T classical expected values. We observe, moreover, that the amplitude of quantum deviations increases slightly with increasing density. This experimental method allows us to extract, even in a region where the dynamics still maintains a collective character, such typical single particle properties as the mean atomic kinetic energy.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the fragile glass former orthoterphenyl: a flexible molecule model. II. Collective dynamics.

We present a molecular dynamics study of the collective dynamics of a model for the fragile glass former orthoterphenyl. In this model, introduced by Mossa, Di Leonardo, Ruocco, and Sampoli [Phys. Rev. E 62, 612 (2000)], the intramolecular interaction among the three rigid phenyl rings is described by a set of force constants whose value has been fixed in order to obtain a realistic isolated molecule spectrum. The interaction between different molecules is described by a Lennard Jones site-site potential. We study the behavior of the coherent scattering functions F(t)(q,t), considering the density fluctuations of both molecular and phenyl-ring centers of mass; moreover we directly simulate the neutron scattering spectra taking into account both the contributions due to carbon and hydrogens atoms. We compare our results with the main predictions of the mode-coupling theory and with the available coherent neutron scattering experimental data.

Topological description of the aging dynamics in simple glasses.

We numerically investigate the aging dynamics of a monatomic Lennard-Jones glass, focusing on the topology of the potential energy landscape which, to this aim, has been partitioned in basins of attraction of stationary points (saddles and minima). The analysis of the stationary points visited during the aging dynamics shows the existence of two distinct regimes: (i) at short times the system visits basins of saddles whose energies and orders decrease with t; (ii) at long times the system mainly lies in basins pertaining to minima of slowly decreasing energy. The long time dynamics can be represented by a simple random walk on a network of minima with a jump probability proportional to the inverse of the waiting time.

Glass transition and density fluctuations in the fragile glass former orthoterphenyl.

High-resolution Brillouin light scattering is used to measure the dynamic structure factor of the fragile glass former orthoterphenyl (OTP) in a wide temperature range around the glass transition region and up to the boiling point. The whole set of spectra is described in terms of a phenomenological generalized hydrodynamic model. In the supercooled phase, we show the contemporary existence of the structural process, whose main features come out to be consistent with the results obtained with other spectroscopies, and of a secondary, activated process, which occurs on the 10(-11) s time scale and has a low activation energy (E(f)(a)=0.28 kcal/mol). This latter process, which is also present in the glassy phase and seems to be insensitive to the glass transition, is attributed to the coupling between the density modes and intramolecular degrees of freedom. In the normal liquid phase, the two processes merge together, and the resulting characteristic time is no longer consistent with those derived with other spectroscopies. The analysis points to the conclusion that, for what concerns the long-wavelength density fluctuations in fragile glass formers such as OTP, the universal dynamical features related to the glass transition come out clearly only in the supercooled phase and at frequencies lower than approximately 10(6) Hz.

[Risk factors for behavioral and emotional problems in childhood: a community study in Uruguay].

OBJECTIVES: To explore some of the demographic risk factors that are associated with the risk of behavioral or emotional problems in children, and to examine the possibility of an association between psychological stress in the parents and psychological problems in their children. METHODS: In this study, the presence of psychological stress in the parents and certain psychosocial characteristics that increase the risk of mental problems in childhood were examined in a sample of Uruguayan children from three communities, two urban and one rural. The study, which was carried out in Ciudad Vieja and Barrio Sur, in the city of Montevideo, and in Colonia de Sacramento, a rural town, comprised 115 children between the ages of 5 and 15. Mothers answered the Child Psychiatric Morbidity Questionnaire (QMPI), an instrument for the detection of behaviors pointing to the presence of emotional problems in children. Both parents also supplied the demographic information requested in the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview Demoralization Scale; they answered the CAGE questionnaire, a screening tool for alcoholism; they responded to the Social Support Network Inventory; and they answered questions about their self-perceived mental health. RESULTS: Fifty-three percent of the children had scores greater than 6 on the QMPI, which indicates the possible presence of behavioral or emotional problems. Fathers' self-perception of emotional problems and mothers' feeling of being demoralized showed a statistically significant association with a greater risk of behavioral or emotional problems in their children. CONCLUSIONS: In light of our results, mental health in childhood is a social and public health problem that warrants further epidemiologic study in Uruguay.

Saddles in the energy landscape probed by supercooled liquids.

We numerically investigate the supercooled dynamics of two simple model liquids exploiting the partition of the multidimensional configuration space in basins of attraction of the stationary points (inherent saddles) of the potential energy surface. We find that the inherent saddle order and potential energy are well-defined functions of the temperature T. Moreover, by decreasing T, the saddle order vanishes at the same temperature (T(MCT)) where the inverse diffusivity appears to diverge as a power law. This allows a topological interpretation of T(MCT): it marks the transition from a dynamics between basins of saddles (T > T(MCT)) to a dynamics between basins of minima (T < T(MCT)).

Evidence of two viscous relaxation processes in the collective dynamics of liquid lithium.

New inelastic x-ray scattering experiments have been performed on liquid lithium in a wide wave vector range. With respect to the previous measurements, the instrumental resolution, improved up to 1. 5 meV, allows one to accurately investigate the dynamical processes determining the observed shape of the dynamic structure factor S(Q, omega). A detailed analysis of the line shapes shows the coexistence of relaxation processes with both slow and fast characteristic time scales, and therefore shows that pictures of the relaxation mechanisms based on a simple viscoelastic model must be abandoned.

Nature of the short wavelength excitations in vitreous silica: An X-Ray brillouin scattering study

The dynamical structure factor [ S(Q,E)] of vitreous silica has been measured by inelastic x-ray scattering varying the exchanged wave vector ( Q) at fixed exchanged energy ( E)-an experimental procedure that, contrary to the usual one at constant Q, provides spectra with much better identified inelastic features. This allows us to obtain the first direct evidence of Brillouin peaks in the S(Q,E) of SiO2 at energies above the boson peak (BP) energy, a finding that excludes the possibility that the BP marks the transition from propagating to localized dynamics in glasses.

Experimental evidence of the acousticlike character of the high frequency excitations in glasses

The dynamic structure factor S(Q,E) of glassy glycerol has been measured by inelastic x-ray scattering as a function of momentum transfer Q and at constant energy transfer E. This allows one to establish independently from specific models of S(Q,E) the following: (i) Propagating collective excitations exist in glasses at high Q. (ii) Their dispersion up to E higher than E(BP) (the boson peak energy) confirms that E(BP) is not the onset of modes localization. (iii) The observation of an almost Q independent plateau on the high Q side of the Brillouin peak supports numerical simulations on glasses, describing the vibrational eigenvectors in terms of acousticlike and "random" components.

Off-equilibrium effective temperature in monatomic Lennard-Jones glass.

The off-equilibrium dynamics of a monatomic Lennard-Jones glass is numerically investigated after sudden isothermal density jumps (crunch) from well equilibrated liquid configurations towards the glassy state. The generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation has been studied and the temperature dependence of the violation factor m is found in agreement with the one step replica symmetry breaking scenario, i.e., at low temperature m(T) is found proportional to T up to an off-equilibrium effective temperature T(eff), where m(T(eff)) = 1. We report T(eff) as a function of the density and compare it with the glass transition temperature T(g) as determined by equilibrium calculations.

Relaxation processes in harmonic glasses?

A relaxation process, with the associated phenomenology of sound attenuation and sound velocity dispersion, is found in a simulated harmonic Lennard-Jones glass. We propose to identify this process with the so-called microscopic (or, instantaneous) relaxation process observed in real glasses and supercooled liquids. A model based on the memory function approach accounts for the observation and allows one to relate to each other (1) the characteristic time and strength of this process, (2) the low frequency limit of the dynamic structure factor of the glass, and (3) the high frequency sound attenuation coefficient, with its observed quadratic dependence on the momentum transfer.

Frustration and sound attenuation in structural glasses

Three classes of harmonic disorder systems (Lennard-Jones-like glasses, percolators above threshold, and spring disordered lattices) have been numerically investigated in order to clarify the effect of different types of disorder on the mechanism of high frequency sound attenuation. We introduce the concept of frustration in structural glasses as a measure of the internal stress, and find a strong correlation between the degree of frustration and the exponent alpha that characterizes the momentum dependence of the sound attenuation gamma(Q) approximately Qalpha. In particular, alpha decreases from approximately d+1 in low-frustration systems (where d is the spectral dimension) to approximately 2 for high-frustration systems such as the realistic glasses examined.

Determination of the short-wavelength propagation threshold in the collective excitations of liquid ammonia

The dynamics structure factor S(Q,E) of liquid ammonia l-NH3 at T = 200 K and at its vapor pressure has been measured by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) in the 1-15 nm(-1) momentum transfer ( Q) range. Contrary to previous IXS studies on other associated liquids and glasses, in l-NH3 a large inelastic signal is observed up to Q = 15 nm(-1). This, enabling S(Q,E) measurements as a function of Q at constant E transfer, allows us to demonstrate experimentally the transition from a propagating dynamics regime, where the acoustic excitation energy linearly disperses with Q, to a high-Q regime, where it is no longer possible to observe a dominant excitation in the S(Q,E).

Potential energy landscape and long-time dynamics in a simple model glass

We analyze the properties of a Lennard-Jones system at the level of the potential energy landscape. After an exhaustive investigation of the topological features of the landscape of the systems, obtained by studying small size samples, we describe the dynamics of the systems in multidimensional configurational space by means of a simple model. This considers the configurational space as a connected network of minima where the dynamics proceeds by jumps described by an appropriate master equation. Using this model we are able to reproduce the long-time dynamics and the low temperature regime. We investigate both the equilibrium regime and the off-equilibrium one, finding those typical glassy behaviors usually observed in the experiments such as (i) a stretched exponential relaxation, (ii) a temperature-dependent stretching parameter, (iii) a breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation, and (iv) the appearance of a critical temperature below which one observes a deviation from the fluctuation-dissipation relation as a consequence of the lack of equilibrium in the system.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the fragile glass-former orthoterphenyl: A flexible molecule model

We present a realistic model of the fragile glass-former orthoterphenyl and the results of extensive molecular dynamics simulations in which we investigated its basic static and dynamic properties. In this model the internal molecular interactions between the three rigid phenyl rings are described by a set of force constants, including harmonic and anharmonic terms; the interactions among different molecules are described by Lennard-Jones site-site potentials. Self-diffusion properties are discussed in detail together with the temperature and momentum dependencies of the self-intermediate scattering function. The simulation data are compared with existing experimental results and with the main predictions of the mode-coupling theory.

Intramolecular origin of the fast relaxations observed in the brillouin light scattering spectra of molecular glass formers

The Brillouin light scattering spectra of the o-terphenyl single crystal are compared with those of the liquid and the glass phases. This shows (i) the direct evidence of a fast relaxation at frequencies nu approximately 5 GHz in both the single crystal and the glass; (ii) a similar temperature dependence for the attenuation of the longitudinal sound waves in the single crystal and the glass; and (iii) the absence of coupling between the fast relaxation and the transverse acoustic waves. These results allow us to assign such a relaxation to the coupling between the longitudinal acoustic waves and intramolecular vibrations, and therefore to exclude any relationship between it and the glass transition.

Viscoelastic behavior of water in the terahertz-frequency range: an inelastic x-ray scattering study.

High-resolution, inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor S(q,omega) of liquid water in the THz frequency range have been performed as a function of wave vector q (1-7 nm(-1)) and temperature T (273-473 K), using pressure (0-1.5 kbar) to keep the density at rho approximately 1 g/cm(3). We show that, for q 2 nm(-1), we find that the viscoelastic contribution to the memory function becomes q dependent. Thus this work provides a view on the evolution of the collective dynamics of water across the q region where the continuum approximation inherent in the hydrodynamic formulation begins to fail. The physical consequences of such a result are discussed in some detail.
