Digital sialography: imaging and intervention.

Digital subtraction imaging (DSI) has been widely used in angiography but less commonly applied to sialography. Over a 3-year period 109 patients referred for sialography, 42 males and 67 females with a mean age of 44 years (range 8-85 years), were examined using a digital subtraction imaging technique. 13 patients went on to have an interventional procedure, stone removal or duct dilatation. The role of DSI imaging in sialography and its use in facilitating interventional procedures on the salivary glands are discussed.

The use of Soviet psychological theory in understanding learning dysfunctions.

Learning disabilities have been formally defined as problems caused by inherent neurological dysfunctions. This paper argues that this prevalent interpretation is reductionist, unproven, and fails to provide a theoretical basis for the understanding of these problems. Drawing upon learning theory of Soviet psychologists, this paper offers an alternative interpretation in which learning disabilities are seen as developing within interactive social relationships.

Learning disabilities theory and Soviet psychology: a comparison of basic assumptions.

Critics both within and outside the Learning Disabilities (LD) field have pointed to the weaknesses of LD theory. Beginning with the premise that a significant problem of LD theory has been its failure to explore fully its fundamental assumptions, this paper examines a number of these assumptions about individual and social development, cognition, and learning. These assumptions are compared with a contrasting body of premises found in Soviet psychology, particularly in the works of Vygotsky, Leontiev, and Luria. An examination of the basic assumptions of LD theory and Soviet psychology shows that a major difference lies in their respective nondialectical and dialectical interpretation of the relationship of social factors and cognition, learning, and neurological development.

Educational therapy in a community mental health center.

The existence of serious psychosocial problems in adults caused by or strongly associated with various learning and educational difficulties has not been given sufficient attention by mental health programs. This paper discusses the nature, assessment, and amelioration of these problems through an educational therapy program located in a community mental health center. Educational therapy is essential for these adults because unless their learning and educational difficulties are corrected, no amount of psychotherapy by itself will fully resolve their psychosocial problems.

Literacy skills of long-term hospitalized mental patients.

The authors tested 48 patients who had lived in a state psychiatric hospital for extended periods to determine their literacy levels. Measures used were the reading test portion of the Adult Basic Learning Examination (ABLE) and selected questions from the Adult Performance Level (APL) test, which attempts to assess competencies necessary to function effectively in society. Nearly half of the patients scored at the fourth-grade level or below on the ABLE, and their scores on the APL were well below norms for other groups. No correlation was found between number of years of hospitalization and test performance. From the findings the authors conclude that both in-hospital and aftercare programs must recognize that literacy level is an important factor in the the rehabilitation or recidivism of patients.
