[Angioproliferative processes in gangrenous limbs].

The results of the investigation of the limbs amputated because of the gangrene are presented. Soft tissues close to the gangrenous parts were examined, and in 26 of 100 samples examined angioproliferative processes with the formation of capillary foci were found. Proliferating capillaries grow into the surrounding tissues, including fibrous, muscular and adipose one. The process resembles somewhat neoplastic one: there is an infiltrative growth and mitotic activity. No similar alterations in the gangrenous tissue have been described so far.

[Utilization of computers in the Bureau of Pathology].

Bureau of pathology concentrates a large bulk of information the use of which with routine methods of processing is difficult. The methods of the computer use for the archives material processing is suggested and described.

[Gliosis of the brain in Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis].

An autopsy case of Recklinghausen's disease is described with a large neck neurofibroma, skin melanosis, skull bones and teeth changes, elephantiasis of the head soft tissues, megalocephaly. Histologically an isomorphic-cell brain gliosis as a rare manifestation of neurofibromatosis is found.

[Vascular malformation of the spinal cord].

A case of the arteriovenous aneurysm is described. This congenital anomaly occurs rarely in all parts of the central nervous system including the spinal cord. The aneurysm damages the spinal cord due to haemodynamic and haemorrhagic complications, inflammation and compression resulting in the neuron death and the disturbance of the spinal cord functions.

[The morphology of amebiasis].

Amebiasis--a protozoan human disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica--occurs in the USSR sporadically in particular geographic regions and in particular populations. The paper reports morphologic findings made in patients with amebiasis involving the intestine or other organs. In typical cases, amebiasis affects the large intestine, particularly the cecum and ascending colon, and has the development of distinctive ulcers as its characteristic feature. As the disease progresses, these appear in all parts of the large intestine; less commonly, the terminal portion of the small intestine is also involved. The most frequent complications of amebic colitis are perforation and phlegmon, which result in peritonitis. Not infrequently, amebic abscesses arise in the liver or other organs through hematogenous dissemination of amebas. Histologic diagnosis of amebiasis may be difficult. Recommendations on how to detect amebas and the tissue changes peculiar to amebiasis are given.

[Kaposi's sarcoma combined with generalized miliary tuberculosis].

Available is a case of mycobacterial sepsis in patients with immunodeficiency of undetermined origin and presenting morphologically with disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma. The disease ran the course and exhibited morphological manifestations similar in some details to AIDS. The author advocates a differentiated approach to evaluation of clinical and pathological findings in cases close in appearance.

[Bihormonal apudoma of the pancreas].

A pancreatic tumor that displayed bihormonal activity is described: the tumor elaborated insulin, resulting in a hyperinsulinism syndrome (spontaneous hypoglycemia) as well as a second hormone, apparently gastrin or a gastrin-like polypeptide, which led to the development of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The presence of these two syndromes complicated both the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. A histologic examination using an argyrophilic (Grimelius) reaction confirmed that the tumor had originated from endocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract and was a bihormonal apudoma of the pancreas.

[Teratoid diktyoma of the eye].

This rarely encountered ocular tumor, observed in a girl aged 9 years, was derived from an undifferentiated embryonal retina and bore structural resemblance to the primordial retina of the optical vesicle. The tumor contained tissues and structures extraneous to the eye and was therefore classified as teratoid medulloepithelioma.

[Experience in organizing the operations of a large histopathology laboratory].

In connection with the organization of large centralized pathology departments serving up to 4-6 thousand beds or more in hospitals the use of routine methods of work of histological laboratories becomes unacceptable. The authors shares his experience in organization work of a large histopathological laboratories, suggesting available devices increasing the labour productivity and culture and requiring no scarce glassware.

[Morpho-ecological characteristics of thyroid diseases in various regions of Russia and Belorussia from surgical data].

Thyroid lesions were histologically studied on surgical material obtained in 1992-1996 in 12 regions of Russian Federation and Republic of Belarus. Various forms of thyroid pathology were considered with reference to local ecological situation. An increase of thyroid carcinoma incidence and particularly that of papillary carcinoma was observed in regions with radiation pollution (Chelyabinsk and Bryansk regions). A high degree of correlation exists between the incidence of various forms of thyroid pathology and radiation situation. This is also true for pollution of sewage and the presence of ferrous metallurgy factories. No correlation was found with the pollution of atmosphere.

[Quality of clinical diagnosis: pathological-anatomical criteria].

In addition to discrepancy of clinical and anatomopathological diagnosis the author proposes several other criteria for assessment of quality of clinical diagnosis: hypo- and hyperdiagnosis, diagnosis of lethal complications, late diagnosis of the basic disease and fatal complications, diagnosis of iatrogenic complications, accuracy of formulation of the fanal diagnosis, use of biopsies for specification of clinical diagnosis and control of the patients' treatment. Complete computerization of the pathologist's workplace makes all these criteria most effective.
