A procedure to achieve controlled pulp exposure: an explorative experiment.

The present paper reports the development of a method by which controlled pulp exposure can be achieved. Buccal cavities in teeth of adult monkeys were prepared by very slow intermittent cutting, using air as a coolant. During each intermission the electrical resistance of the tissues was measured by means of direct current. One electrode contacted the gingiva and the other was bur itself. The resistance values were related to observations in histological sections of the teeth. Under the conditions described, pulp exposure occurred at an electrical resistance of about 10 mega-ohm (M omega).

The effect of cavity preparation on the metabolism of protein in dentin.

Tritiated proline was administered to domestic cats during the development of their permanent dentition. The amount of residual radioactivity was determined autoradiographically at various times after cavity preparation in mature molars and premolars. Two wk after cavity preparation, the amount of radiolabel beneath the axial cavity wall decreased to about 50% of that present in corresponding contralateral cavity-free teeth. The observed decreases are ascribed to an enhancement of the protein metabolism in dentin. At 45 wk, 80-90% of the radiolabel has disappeared. This paper discusses the role of an eventual effect of microleakage on the latter results.

Plastic replicas as three-dimensional models of pulps.

It has been found that the plastic models significantly enhance the student's knowledge of the anatomy of teeth as it relates to operative dentistry. The fact that the models are three-dimensional eliminates guesswork as to the exact position of the pulp, and the rigidity of the plastic cast enhances the recovery of morphological features of the pulp as it existed in the natural tooth.
