The role of scanning electron microscopy in periodontal research.

During recent years a great amount of research has led to a better understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis and pattern of progression of periodontal diseases. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has contributed to this improvement, mainly with respect to histology of periodontal tissues, the description of the morphology and distribution of bacteria on the exposed root surface, analysis of the host-parasite interactions on the gingival pocket wall, and morphological evaluation of root treatment. This review deals with all these topics. Unusual types of SEM research are also described and discussed. Uncommon sample preparation techniques for SEM in periodontal research are described. SEM in periodontal research should be of great application in the near future. Cathodoluminescence, back-scattered emission and immunolabelling techniques will be formidable tools in this field of dentistry.

[Hemoperitoneum secondary to aneurysm of the pancreatico-duodenal artery: report of a clinical case].

Pancreaticoduodenal artery (PD A) aneurysms are rare, with a reported incidence of 2% among all splanchnic artery aneurysms. Most of these lesions are undetectable until symptoms of rupture occur. In similar cases (65%), PDA rupture is usually associated with a high mortality rate, with fatal bleeding into the retroperitoneal space, intraperitoneal cavity or gastrointestinal tract. Clinical picture without rupture also has been reported (35%) and is often associated with atypic abdominal signs and symptoms or diagnosed incidentally on radiology studies. The Authors report a case of octogenarian patient with ruptured PDA aneurysm and bleeding into the retroperitoneal space presenting with stable clinical condition. Surgical treatment was performed successfully after radiological diagnosis of retroperitoneal haematoma with good outcome. Patients presenting catastrophic clinical condition need rapid resuscitation and emergency laparotomy: control of the bleeding site may be successful and aetiologycal diagnosis delayed after perioperative angiography. Further laparotomy is mandatory for a definitive treatment such as PDA obliteration or resection. An alternative therapy is the transcatheter embolization. In patients with relatively stable condition, radiological study is stressed. Anyway, the aneurysm should be obliterated whenever possible to avoid rebleeding or local complications such as erosion of the neighboring structure. In conclusion, an appropriate and early treatment lead to a good outcomes.

[Morphological surface analysis of nickel-titanium wires. Preliminary SEM observations].

Authors studied with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) the surface morphology of new manufactured orthodontic arches made of rectangular NiTi wires. All the wires exhibite various patterns of superficial defects such as scratches and pits. Results suggest to further investigate the changes of wire surfaces subsequent to their use in oral environment and sterilization procedures.

A comparative clinical assessment of a hollow-fibre membrane oxygenator (Capiox II) and a bubble oxygenator (Harvey 1500).

Personal experience is reported on the use of a membrane oxygenator, the Capiox II, which is clinically compared with a bubble oxygenator for medium-term perfusion. The characteristics considered were the efficiency of the heat exchanger, the oxygenating capacity, traumatic effects on the blood and the direct effect on the renal and cardiopulmonary systems. The Capiox II demonstrated a better oxygenating capacity, less platelet damage, a smaller variation in the free plasma haemoglobin, a significant difference in postoperative bleeding and blood transfusion requirements, but showed no variation in renal and cardiopulmonary function. The authors suggest that the Capiox II is to be preferred for extra-corporeal circulation of medium duration, for which it combines the advantages of both bubble and membrane oxygenators, while being less complex and costly than previously marketed membrane devices.
