Surgical operations on the lips are characteristically required when dealing with epithelial tumors in dermatosurgery. Aside from precancerous stages, the definitive removal of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas is most common. The immediate reconstruction of lip defects proves successful, utilizing the histologic examination of the cut edge by cryotechnique. All operative techniques that reconstruct the circular musculature of the musculus orbicularis oris in its natural uniformity are appropriate. Of the large variety of reconstructive procedures, this article discusses those techniques that are used routinely.
Burns caused by exposure to hydrofluoric acid are characterized by severe progressive tissue destruction and excruciating pain resulting from the unique properties of the fluoride ion. The subungual tissues are especially susceptible to the destructive effects of hydrofluoric acid. Therefore, proper treatment of hydrofluoric acid burns requires prompt recognition and the institution of specific therapeutic measures by the attending dermatologist.
Under both inpatient and outpatient conditions several skin grafting techniques (eg. split-skin meshgraft, postage stampgrafts) can be useful in treating already phlebosurgically operated venous ulcers. 82 already phlebosurgically longterm treated venous ulcers were skin grafted under clinical conditions in the time from 1983 to 1992. Various characteristics of this patient-group (eg. age, sex, duration of disease, localization and size of venous ulcer) were put retrospectively into comparison with those of 72 patients suffering from venous ulcers treated exclusively in a conservative manner. Patients of the skin grafted group - aged mostly 55 to 65 years - suffered longer from chronic venous ulcers, of which 15 were circulatory. The time interval between clinical admission and skin grafting (16th to 28th day), the index of healing dependent indicator for the dermato-surgical intervention, as well as short and long term results, were investigated. In contrast to favourable short term results (39 patients with complete, 17 with > 50% settlement of skin graft) long term results were rather disappointing. 27 of 39 operated patients with initially successfully treated venous ulcers answered a questionnaire in which, as a result, only 15 did not suffer a relapse one to nine years after the dermatosurgical intervention. Despite of these results, simple techniques of skin grafting will still be in future of great value.

Even before Joseph Lister (1827-1912) discovered and adopted the concept of antisepsis in 1867, pioneering work in the field of plastic surgery had already begun in Germany very early in the nineteenth century. The best known surgeons working in this field at that time were Karl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787-1840) and Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach (1794-1847) in Berlin and Philipp Franz von Walther (1782-1849) in Bonn and Munich. Three early plastic surgeons who were active in Dresden can and should be compared to them. These are, in chronological order, Johann August Wilhelm Hedenus (the elder; 1760-1834), Friedrich August von Ammon (1799-1861) and Eduard Zeis (1807-1868); Zeis' career is reviewed briefly here with the accent on Dresden. Born in Dresden on 1 October 1807, after finishing his training in 1932 he set up in general practice in his home town. Here he wrote his epoch-making "Handbuch der plastischen Chirurgie" (Handbook of Plastic Surgery; published in 1838), thus establishing the term "plastische Chirurgie", which has been adopted and assimilated into different languages all over the world. The best wishes of his friends went with him when Zeis went to take up the professorship in Marburg. This position did not live up to his expectations, however. In 1849 he returned to Dresden, where he worked until his death as senior medical officer in the newly established municipal hospital in Dresden-Friedrichstadt.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Around 1900, dermatology as practised in Prague formed a link between Austria and Germany. The Congress of the German Dermatological Society held in 1889 in Prague was the first highlight of this connection. The topics and contents of the papers are characterized. The development of the dermatological clinics in Prague is described and their directors and research emphases are listed.
