On the advantages of information sharing.

During the evolution of life, there have been several transitions in which individuals began to cooperate, forming higher levels of organization, and sometimes losing their independent reproductive identity For example, multicellularity and insect societies evolved independently multiple times. Several factors that confer evolutionary advantages on higher levels of organization have been proposed. In this paper we highlight one additional factor: the sharing of information between individuals. Information sharing is not subject to the intrinsic conservation laws that characterize the sharing of physical resources. A simple model will illustrate how information sharing can result in aggregates in which the individuals both receive more information about their environment and pay less for it. This may have played a role in the evolution of higher levels of organization.

[Cystic degeneration of the adventitia of the popliteal artery as a possible sequela of entrapment syndrome].

We report two cases of cystic adventitial degeneration of the popliteal artery in young sportsmen. The pathogenetic role of microtrauma is suggested by the localisation of the adventitial cysts, the clinical symptoms, as well as the immunohistochemical demonstration of foamy macrophages instead of endothelial cells in the wall of the cysts. In one case the cause of the intermittent claudication could be verified by duplex sonography and comparison of the arterial pressure of both legs with a Doppler method only after physical exercise. As expected, an angiodilatation has only a temporary effect. Therefore a surgical resection of the cyst or of the involved arterial segment had be performed.

[Stimulation of wound healing by tetrachlordecaoxide. Results of a randomized double-blind study].

In 38 patients with chronic therapeutically resistant wounds, which, in 25 cases, had been existing for more than one year, Tetrachlorodecaoxide ( TCDO ) in a water solution containing glycerin was analyzed for its capacity to induce wound healing and compared in this respect to the standard in moist wound treatment, physiological sodium chloride. The results of the clinical trial demonstrate that the TCDO solution is significantly superior to physiological saline in local wound treatment regarding the degree of wound smear reduction, the formation of wound granulation tissue, the stimulation of epithelisation on the wound borders and the shrinking of the wound surface. The differences in therapeutic efficiency are so large that, in spite of the relatively small patient samples (21 + 17) it was possible to verify the superiority of a method for wound treatment in a randomized double blind clinical trial.

[On crossed reflexes in human leg motoricity (author's transl)].

Crossed reflexes induced in the muscles of the calf were studied in 30 neurologically healthy volunteers. Almost half of the volunteers showed a pronounced reaction of the contralateral gastrocnemius muscle and of the soleus on ipsilateral stimulation of the corresponding muscle. The results vary, but they show that fundamentally there are processes of facilitation and inhibition due to the stimulation of the tension receptors or Golgi tendon organs of the stimulated muscle and also to the muscle spindle afferents of the antagonistically stretched muscle. It is assumed that the contralateral reflexes can exercise a modulatory effect on the central locomotor program, although they do not monitor it.

Biographical situation of scoliotic children and their relationship to the social environment(author's transl).

Studies were conducted to determine whenther or not scoliosis in childhood affects the behavior and experience of the affected children. Two groups of scoliotic and nonscoliotic children were examined with selected psychological tests. No differences could be found in regard to neuroticism, extraversion, manifest fear or the children's self-image. Differences were found in regard to the social environment which scoliotic children experienced as more demanding and supportive. As a result they were more concerned with achievement in a performance situation and more confident of success. The type and extent of the psychological effects of scoliosis is determined by the position accorded to the children by the social environment. Negative consequences can best be dealt with by educating the parents.

[The personality of children with weak posture].

An attempt is made on two groups of children with weak posture and of normal children aged 8 to 10 years to demonstrate a statistical link between fibrous tissue-weakness and certain psychological characteristics. In tests and observations of experiences and behavior of children one finds: Compared with the controls the children showing symptoms suffer psychosomatic changes. The cause is held to be not just increased psychomotor clumsiness, but their behavior pattern is essentially due to psychological pressure of their environment (parents, school, friends etc). This leads to: reduction self-confidence, increased experience of failure, hypercompensatory view of the self with strong criticism of others and again physical dysfunction. To offer treatment is not enough. We have to demand a spread of information, cooperative efforts of teachers , school-physicians and parents and education by team-work.

[Development of biologic report systems for prostheses and ortheses (author's transl)].

By linkage with the physiologic sensory nervous system we have tried to open up information channels for reporting back states of prostheses and ortheses. Wired surface- and subcutaneous electrodes are used. Stable and conductive contact has been observed up to 1 1/2 years. Detachment is secured but quantitative allocation to certain sensory processes is not yet possible. Future work with improved technical means and using correlation analysis is required.
