Albumen gland of the snail Achatina fulica is the site for synthesis of AchatininH, a sialic acid binding lectin.

A sialic acid binding lectin, AchatininH was purified from the hemolymph of Achatina fulica snail. To identify the site of synthesis of AchatininH, in vitro incubation studies in presence of labelled amino acid precursor were performed. Different organs from the snail were sliced and incubated in methionine-deficient Eagle's minimum essential medium containing [35S]-methionine at 25 degrees C for 5 h. After termination of incubation, tissues were homogenized, centrifuged and the de novo synthesized protein was immunoprecipitated with specific AchatininH antibody, followed by protein-A. The precipitated antigen-antibody complex was analysed by SDS-PAGE. Data obtained from native gel electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE radioautographic analysis indicates that AchatininH is synthesized in the albumen gland.

Pediatric HIV-1 disease in a Kampala Hospital.

Data of pediatric patients screened for HIV-1 infection between 1985 and 1989 were studied retrospectively in one of the major mission hospitals of Kampala (Uganda). Symptomatic HIV-1 infection was mainly acquired perinatally and was diagnosed in 87 per cent in children under 2 years of age. The mortality rate was 40 per cent in pediatric in-patients with symptomatic HIV-1 infection as compared to 12 per cent in overall pediatric inpatients. Symptoms included in the WHO clinical case definition for pediatric AIDS were mainly insensitive, unspecific and demonstrated a low positive predictive value. There was no difference in the prevalence of malaria and measles between HIV-1 positive and HIV-1 negative children.

Validity of General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-36/GHQ-12) in the psychiatric O.P.D. of a general hospital--a pilot study.

Two shorter versions of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) viz. GHQ-36 physical illness items removed (GHQ-36-P) and GHQ-12 were validated in the psychiatric OPD of a teaching hospital in Calcutta among known patients and controls. It was found that a higher cut-off point than that originally recommended yielded satisfactory validation indices for both the versions.

A high-affinity monoclonal antibody (GIF-1) to human gamma-interferon: neutralization of interferon mediated inhibition of retrovirus production and 2'-5' (A) synthetase induction.

An hybridoma clone secreting an IgG1 monoclonal antibody (GIF-1) specific for human gamma-interferon (HuIFN-gamma) has been generated using HAT medium supplemented with insulin (HIAT) at the initial stage of cell fusion. This antibody is capable of neutralizing the antiviral activity of HuIFN-gamma, the ability of HuIFN-gamma to inhibit retroviral replication in RD-114 cells, and the ability of HuIFN-gamma to induce the 2'-5' oligoadenylate (A) synthetase in RD-114 and HeLa cells. Eluate from an immunoaffinity column containing GIF-1 yielded two protein bands of molecular weight of 20 and 25 kd when subjected to SDS-PAGE.

Biatrial myxoma associated with mitral valve lesion.

Biatrial myxomas are extremely rare. By 1983, only eight successful removals of such tumors had been reported. We describe another such patient, who also had involvement of the mitral valve. Diagnostic aspects of echocardiography and a simple operative technique for the en bloc removal of both tumors are discussed.
