The Pharmacia Multiphor II horizontal electrophoresis chamber is a widespread tool for analysis of PCR products in forensic casework. Up to date, however, there is no protocol for successfully running high-resolution denaturing PAGE (poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis) on a horizontal electrophoresis chamber. We modified the electrophoresis conditions to make this possible.
Psychopathological symptoms of 342 manic-depressive patients with a family history (FH) of manic-depressive illness (MDI) and suicide (FH-S-positive group) were compared with 80 manic-depressive patients with a family history of MDI but without suicide (FH-S-negative group). Frequencies of suicide tendencies, attempted suicides, rage, angry mania and delusions were evaluated. In contrast to the FH-S-positive group where suicide tendencies and attempted suicides were more frequent, the FH-S-negative group revealed a higher frequency of delusions. There was no difference between the groups concerning rage and angry mania. Comparisons regarding suicide tendencies, attempted suicides, rage, angry mania and diagnostics referring to depressive, manic, subdepressive and hypomanic phases showed no difference between the sexes.
The regulation concerning discretionary treatment (Paragraph 110, Penal Statute Book) and the privileged status of the physician according to Paragraph 88, Section 2, Number 2 of the Penal Statute Book is taken as a basis, in addition to an examination of the obligation of the physician to provide information on the one hand, and on the other the Personal Data Protection Law, and it is demonstrated that legal regulations are necessary. They do not always lead to a "legalification of medicine" because legislation considers the inherent dangers of the profession. However, hastily determined regulations such as the Personal Data Protection Law provide no solution and confuse and burden the physician.

Using the casuistic presentation of a case of arson with ensuing double murder and extended suicide by jumping over a rock face, we discuss to what extent genetic disposition is important for the formation of reactive-psychotic states that lead to crimes of extreme violence. From the results of protracted research on the previous history of the perpetrator and of his relatives, a multifactorial disposition toward affective psychoses, alcoholism, epilepsy, and suicide was discovered. On the other hand, in the long-term longitudinal observation of the perpetrator, manic depressiveness was diagnosed, which was characterized by a rapid bi-polar phase shift. This supports the opinion of the authors--partially contradictory to the literature--that such affective outbursts, which have apparently arisen purely reactively, but which lead to murder and suicide, in most cases arise on an endogenic basis. In such cases one should not speak of an exclusively reactive depression (mania) before the possibility of an endogenic component has been excluded. The latter, however, can only be detected through precise long-term longitudinal diagnosis and data on the family's psychiatric history. Otherwise, an endo-reactive depression (mania) must be diagnosed. This implies in these cases at least an "irresistible impulse" (Dispositionsunfähigkeit) of the perpetrator.
Medical problems and their solution may call for consideration of legal consequences in advance, as medical action can result in a violation of the penal code. This is illustrated in the case of homoiotransplantation, using fetal kidneys, which leads to prolicide without abortion (96, 97 StGB) and the surgical separation of Siamese twins an unpaired common organ. The predictable death of one constitutes the fact of murder (75 StGB) while prolicide is possible under the regulations of the Austrian penal code.

On the occasion of autopsies of 4 toxicomaniac adolescents sniffing and occasionally drinking trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride and gasoline severe arteriosclerotic damage of the coronary vessels was encountered. Experimental intoxication of 12 rabbits with these solvents over a period of 10 weeks, each time until a prenarcotic stage, provoked pathological changes in accordance with well known findings but no arteriosclerosis. Ergometrical examination with simultaneous recording of the E.C.G. of 6 adolescents with solvent-sniffing history and of 1 man, working for years under trichlorethylene exposure conditions and showing symptoms of chronic intoxication, revealed no signs of coronary-artery insufficiency. These findings are not inconsistent with the assumption -- though not substantiating it -- of a causal relationship between the intoxication with trichlorethylene, carbon terachloride and gasoline and the development of arteriosclerosis, as the coronary sclerosis may be of the elstic type with a very high degree of adaptability and the probands proved unable to reach the limit of maximum stress. In addition to the main purpose the occurrence of epileptic seizures following chronic trichlorethylene sniffing in one case and the manifestation of pulmonary obstruction following i.v. application of Methyl-Phenidat (Ritalin) in two cases are reported.
