The presence of acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve fibres in the deep pineal gland and the pineal stalk but not in the superficial part of adult albino rats.

Application of the histochemical method for testing acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) showed the presence of AChE-positive nerve fibers in the deep pineal gland and the pineal stalk but not in the superficial part of adult albino rats. These findings may indirectly support the existence of the potentially cholinergic innervation of at least some of the rat pinealocytes present in these parts of the gland and augment the evidence of the heterogeneity of the rat pinealocytes. It is possible that cholinergic neurons in the medial habenular nuclei or in the parasympathetic sphenopalatine ganglion may be a source of these AChE-positive fibres. The examination was performed at the light microscope level.

Regulating unregulated markets.

Ongoing political and economic changes in the ex-socialist countries have proved to be very expensive socially. The sudden transition from a centrally planned to a market economy had led to an increase of social problems. One commonly observed danger is the rapid increase in alcohol consumption. The rates of total alcohol consumption are particularly high in those countries where spirit consumption dominates. Considerable pressure is being applied to liberate the alcohol market from all restrictions. Inadequate legislation in the new economic situation, modifications in value systems, and the general rejection of all legislative solutions developed under the previous regime have created a climate conducive to the development of an unregulated alcohol market. State administrations have lost control of the alcohol market. Previous data on consumption have ceased to be reliable sources of information. The dynamic increase in alcohol-related problems is dangerous for public health. If this situation is to be corrected, the first step must be regulation of the alcohol market.

Absence of acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve structure in the superficial part of the pineal gland of adult albino rats.

Application of the histochemical method for testing acetylcholiesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) combined with silver impregnation of the nervous tissue showed the absence of AChE-positive nerve structures in the superficial part of the pineal gland in adult male albino rats. It was carried out at the level of the light microscope. If it is assumed that the test for the presence of AChE is a form of indirect conclusion concerning the cholinergic nature of given nerve structures, then in the case of the superficial innervation of the pineal gland, the outcome of the test is negative.
