[Lipid peroxidation and the role of quaternary ammonium compounds in normalizing this process].

Regulation of lipid peroxidation is realized not only by antioxidant enzymes but by natural antioxidants as well. We have lately succeeded, together with the students, in identifying antioxidant properties of quaternary ammonium compounds, which fact makes it possible for the above properties to gain extensive applicability in a setting where there is this variety of disbolism. One of such drug preparations is ethonium. The article contains information about uses of ethonium in the tablet dose form. The tablets are of little toxicity, they stimulate the oxidation-reduction processes and proved to be effective in experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers.

[Joint action of ethonium and antibiotics on gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms].

The inhibitory effect of antibiotics and their combinations with ethonium was studied in vitro with 10 strains of Staph. aureus and 10 strains of E. coli, Sh. sonnei and Pr. morganii. Ethonium is an antimicrobial drug of the group of cationic surface-active substances. The study was performed with the method of serial dilutions in a liquid nutrient medium. It was found that under the effect of the subbacteriostatic concentrations of ethonium, sensitivity of the microorganisms to benzylpenicillin, streptomycin, levomycetin and tetracycline increased 4-16, 2-8, 2-32 and 64-256 times, respectively. Along with the increasing of the antibiotic activity, ethonium promoted a decrease in the rate of the Staph. aureus adaptation to the above antibiotics.

[Combined effect of ethonium and antibiotics on Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

The combined effect of ethonium and 5 antibiotics belonging to different groups was studied with 30 clinical strains of P. aeruginosa. A 2--8-fold increase in the activity of kanamycin and tetracycline against some strains was observed. The MIC of carbenicillin, polymycin M and cefotaxime was lowered by 2--6 times and with respect to some strains by 16--32 times. The detergent is recommended to be used in combination with some antibiotics in treatment of infections caused by resistant strains of P. aeruginosa.
